Public input is important and is received at several points during the RFO process. On July 11, DGS held a public hearing on the surplus of the Hamilton and Shaed Schools. An additional hearing on the surplus of the Shaed School property will be held on August 21.

Finally, on August 20, DGS has scheduled a hearing to provide residents with an opportunity to hear from parties who submit bids on the Hamilton property. A similar meeting for the Shaed School should be scheduled shortly and our office will circulate a notice as soon as we receive the information.

Mint Dental

I know we have all been wondering what will come to the retail slot in the Mint Condos on 4th and RIA NE - well a pair of dentists have acquired the entire 3000 SF and plan to open Mint Dental.

While I know many of us were hoping for a restaurant the dentists seem like they will be great neighbors and are hard at work looking to open as soon as they can permits permitting. Maybe even this year!  This will add some more daytime foot traffic to that intersection and if they take your insurance will let you walk to the dental office twice a year for your cleanings instead of traveling across town like I currently do. Fingers crossed they take mine!

Great Streets Grant Initiative-For Immediate Attention

PFrom: McDuffie, Kenyan (Council)
Subject: Re: Great Streets Grant Initiative-For Immediate Attention

Hello Ward 5 Residents,

Over the past several months, I ushered through the Council legislation designating three Ward 5 corridors as a Retail Priority Areas: Bladensburg Road, North Capitol Street, and Rhode Island Avenue. These corridors are deeply deserving of investment by the city, and Retail Priority Area designation allows that investment to occur.

I am pleased to announce that the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) is taking advantage of these new Retail Priority Area designations by making grants available to businesses on Bladensburg Road and Rhode Island Avenue (a similar program was previously offered to businesses on North Capitol Street). The Great Streets Grant Initiative is now accepting applications for grants of up to $85,000 to support and foster growth amongst small businesses.

Eligible applicants must own retail or service business within DMPED’s specified boundaries and must satisfy other eligibility requirements. An applicant may be a property owner or a lessee. Interested business owners must submit their application online by visiting www.greatstreets.dc.gov. The deadline to submit an application is September 9, 2013 at 6:00pm.

I am pleased that, in partnership with DMPED, we are able to dedicate public resources to enhance the offerings and amenities available to our Ward 5 businesses.

Please share this announcement with business owners and entrepreneurs in the ward.

Best,
Kenyan

Casey Trees Summer Almanac

Please see the message and link below to the Casey Trees Summer Almanac!  It is a great resource for how to take care of our DC trees during this time of heat and humidity.

Wanted to share our new Summer Almanac and encourage you to share with your readership – the hotter and hotter temperatures mean that the Summer Solstice was right on time and it’s incredibly important to get the word out about proper watering and tree care specific to the summer conditions. Feel free to check it out here:
