The weather is looking good for a February cleanup! I have asked the Ward 5 candidates if they are coming and I think we may see a few. Please join us in making our neighborhood a better place.

Just wanted to send out a reminder that tomorrow is the Edgewood Neighborhood monthly cleanup. The group meets in front of the Edgewood Rec Center at the corner of 3rd and Evarts NE at 10:30 a.m. The cleanup is sponsored by the Friends of Edgewood Recreation Center and occurs the first Saturday of every month same time and location. The group picks up trash around the neighborhood including the rec center and has a cookout afterwards.

This is a great way to meet your neighbors and show pride in our neighborhood!

If you cannot come try and cleanup around your block today or tomorrow morning so we can cover more areas!!!

Edgewood has a very diverse housing stock with a wide range of sizes and prices. Right now the most expensive places listed are the new homes being built in Chancellor's Row listed at $649,900 while the least expensive listing is a one bedroom condo listed at $125,000. It seems that there continues to be a steady number of houses selling across the price ranges and there are quite a few pending sales that have yet to be posted. The overall number of houses in the neighborhood for sale continues to be low.

Community Weatherization Project in Edgewood

Please see the information below about the project starting in Edgewood for weatherizing your home. I am one of the homeowners that has signed up so far and I wanted to make sure that more of my neighbors knew about this opportunity. I was drawn to the project because it creates new green jobs for DC residents with training and room for advancement while using local, small businesses. The need to weatherize my old rowhouse and be able to save money while helping create jobs in DC seemed like an ideal opportunity.

CommunityWeatherization Project in Edgewood

WeatherizeDC guides community members in coordinating theirhome energy upgrades. Pooling residents’ purchasing power helps lock in adiscounted rate for efficiency services, generates savings for each householdbudget and lowers families’ energy use. And participants use their strengthenedeconomic power to reinvest in their local communities.

The initiative makes investing in home energy efficiency simple and affordable.By engaging as a group, residents lower the cost of investing in efficiencyupgrades. In Silver Spring, Maryland, families who coordinated their homeenergy improvements saved on average 15 percent. Local and Federal taxincentives provided additional savings.

By vetting local small businesses, WeatherizeDC ensures residents hirecontractors that deliver top- quality service. We only work with Building andPerformance Institute (BPI) certified contractors. Every project is designed tocreate a unique community benefit. Residents give input into the social impactsthey would like their group purchase to create.

Now one of these projects is taking place in ourcommunity. A group of six homeowners hasalready committed to moving forward with the project, and will begin work atthe end of February – join now and help us secure greater discounts by increasingthe number of participants.

The Process

Partners with neighborhood associations and other community networks to create simple ways for members to participate.
Organizes individuals into bundled requests across neighborhoods.

Recap of the Rhode Island Avenue Task Force Meeting

This morning I attended the Rhode Island Avenue Task Force meeting and I wanted to share what I learned as it pertains to Edgewood. Also, I would like to encourage people to attend these meetings as they are open to the whole community and it is a great way to get your voice heard and be a part of the development of Rhode Island Avenue NE. The next meeting is being scheduled for the end of February.

The meeting started with an introduction of the different groups that were present. There was quite a bit of blunt expression demonstrating the fractured relationship by the Premier CDC group towards the Friends of Rhode Island Ave group. I have experience with the Premier CDC group in regards to them working towards starting an Edgewood Farmer's Market and I joined the Friends of Rhode Island Avenue group when they started last year. So, that said I am not going to go into details of the discussion I am going to say I think both groups have a niche and there is so much to be done that the more the merrier. I just hope people can work together and not duplicate efforts. I think it would be best if each group could focus on specific initiatives and the Task Force meetings could be used to delegate and discusss what each group is doing.

There was a representative from CM Orange's office there and Jeff Miller, Director of Real Estate from the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development was there as well. They were both very informative about programs and initiatives and honest about the lack of money for government funding for many of these items.

I asked many questions about the potential Farmer's Market in Edgewood. Premier CDC group stated that they are still working on it hoping to start one this year. They have been talking with Vanguard at the Rhode Island Shopping Center, but they still do not have anything signed. Jeff Miller stated that his office has also been discussing it with Vanguard and also offered the option that the Rhode Island Row development would be happy to have the Farmer's Market there. It seems that we may very well have one this year.

Jeff Miller also stated that over 50% of the Rhode Island Row development's retail has already been leased. He did not share any new tenants past the ones we already know. I am hoping that Rhode Island Row will start advertising who they are as their spaces are being completed.

The Rhode Island Shopping Center was discussed further as I asked a few more questions about it and was told that development may be closer than I was previously told. Basically the leases being signed by the new discount grocer/retailer are going to be shorter term and redevelopment could happen in pieces.

I made a few connections at the meeting for an outdoor movie night that I am trying to plan and coordinate with multiple groups along Rhode Island Avenue. If anyone is interested in being involved with planning let me know!

ICYMI Lydia DePillis reported this week that a Sav-A-Lot discount grocery store is coming to the Rhode Island Avenue Shopping Center. She reports that it will be opening in Spring/Summer 2012 in a portion of the old Safeway spot. I had been told awhile ago by Vanguard that they were looking at a discount grocery store/ discount store combination to fill the space. This makes me wonder if Big Lots is still looking to fill the rest of this space or if they wanted too long of a lease. The shopping center is looking to redevelop when the leases of its current tenants end in the next 8-10 years.

Please see the email below from MPD regarding a shooting and subsequent arrest in Edgewood this past weekend. I really appreciate their hard work and will send out information when this case appears in court for court watch.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012 at approximately 1:40am, a Pizza Delivery Person was delivering food in the 200 block of Adams St. NE when robbed at gunpoint by three individuals. During the offense, the victim was shot in the facial/neck area. He was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.

MPD officers conducting a canvass of the suspects observed three individuals in a vehicle matching the lookout provided. These individuals were subsequently arrested and charged with the offense.

Eckington's New Nail Place

Update- I walked by with the pups and noticed they are closed on Tuesdays open every other day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. except Sundays when they are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

I noticed that the tax place on Rhode Island Ave NE near 4th Street NE has been converted into a nail and beauty shop. I will update the post when I check it out and see the hours. It is the reincarnation of Elegance Nails which was in the burnt out building that is now the Mint Condos. I am happy to see this as the tax place was closed most of the year and it is nice to have some open businesses on that strip.

What is the Rhode Island Avenue NE/ Task force?

Rhode Island Avenue, NE is a District of Columbia Government designated “Great Streets” corridor. The Great Streets Initiative is a multiple agency effort to transform under-invested corridors into thriving and inviting neighborhood centers using public actions and tools, as needed, to leverage new private investment.

This is an important and long-overlooked corridor that is well-positioned to gain in its importance and prominence to the District. Along with community leadership, property and business owners, residents, and other stakeholders, I invite you to take a significant step with us to implement plans for the commercial districts along the corridor.
Why is your involvement needed?

Rhode Island Avenue, NE has potential to provide new housing, jobs, and retail goods and services, which many in Woodridge, Langdon, Brookland, Edgewood and Brentwood may now buy in the surrounding counties. The Task force will provide strategic recommendations about how we use the great street study to capture a portion of the $1 billion in retail sales revenues (and jobs) lost each year to other jurisdictions. The Task force will help determine where the strategic opportunities are, and what is needed to lay the groundwork for new and sustainable investment using the four sub areas below as a blue print.

13th St to 16th
17th St to Kearny
Monroe to Eastern (low commercial - high residence)

Task Force plans to embrace organized groups and support their complimentary independent initiatives that will move a joint plan: Premier Community Development Corporation (PCDC), Friends of Rhode Island Avenue (FORIA), Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GWHCC), Rhode Island Avenue Business Council, and Ward 5 Business Council, community and business groups

Edgewood Development Update

On Tuesday they broke ground on the CUA South Campus Development now named the Monroe Street Market. Again all over the media and neighborhoods people have been calling it Brookland's new development. I feel like a broken record trying to get these developments to acknowledge that they are in Edgewood! So below are the updates of the developments ongoing in the Edgewood neighborhood for your reading pleasure.

Chancellor's Row (3015 4th Street NE) - 10-acre residential development on St. Paul's campus which began construction Fall 2010 as promised and already has residents living there. They have sold 91 houses as of September 23, 2011. Phase 2 is currently open for sales. Their prices have risen seven percent since opening in 2010. They are building a total of 237 new townhouses in this development and the speed at which they build will depend on sales. At the current rate of sale I imagine they will be building pretty fast and with all the other developments in the area may sell out sooner than they expected.

Monroe Street Market (formerly CUA South Campus Development) (7th Street and Michigan Ave NE) - mixed use development will include approximately 720 housing units, 45 townhouses, and a public square with a college main street with 83,000 square feet of street-level retail, 15,000 square feet of artists' studio space and 850 below-grade parking spaces. They started demolition on the CUA buildings last year and broke ground on November 9, 2011. The first phase of 562 residential units is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2013. There will also be improvements made to the sidewalks, crosswalks and Met Branch Trail connection in that area.

Brookland Artspace Lofts (3225 Eighth Street NE) - 41 live/work rental units directly adjacent to Dance Place's HQ and studio space for qualified DC artists making 60% or less of the area median income construction began Spring 2010 and is completed and at 100% occupancy now. They are accepting applications for their wait list.

Developments Surrounding Edgewood

Rhode Island Row (919 Rhode Island Ave NE) - This project is well underway and should have residents moving in in waves as the apartments are completed. They have posted the rents and they range from $1630 for a 1 bed/bath to $3500 for a 3 bed/bath. The retail is supposed to be announced the end of this year and open Spring 2012. I have only heard that CVS is going to open over there.

Mint Condos (329 Rhode Island Ave NE) - This project is currently underway and is across the street from Edgewood in Eckington. The burnt out shell of a building is being converted into 20 luxury condos priced between $200,000 and $300,000. The building is also supposed to include five retail units and was scheduled for completion in Spring 2011. They have been painting the building and it looks to be well underway with renovations. I am not sure when they plan to have it move in ready or announce retail. They have updated their website.

901 Monroe Street NE - This project is just entering the planning stages across the street in Brookland, but looks promising. The plans are to demolish the current buildings and build 212 Apartments, 16 units at below market rents, and 13,000 sq. ft. of neighborhood-serving retail including a restaurant. Groundbreaking is scheduled for Spring 2012. The zoning commission public hearing is scheduled for January 19, 2012.

Washington Gateway (Intersection of New York Ave and Florida Ave NE) - This project which has been recently revived and perhaps modified to include more residential instead of a hotel will connect NoMa with the Eckington neighborhood. A huge empty 3 acre lot will be transformed into office space and residential with a small retail component. There will be improvements made to the Met Branch Trail which will connect to this development. The groundbreaking is supposed to happen before the end of the year for Phase One which is a building with 400 residential units and 5,200 sq. ft. of retail..

NoMa West (Eckington Place and Q Street NE) - This development broke ground in March 2011 and they have been hard at work with construction every since. There will be a total of three buildings when they are completed and a small amount of retail. There will be an extension of Q street, a pedestrian walkway and connection with the Met Branch Trail included in the project.

McMillan Sand Filtration (North Capitol Street, Michigan Ave, 1 Street NW) - This huge 25 acre site has been the focus of many meetings and plans over the years and I'll put its timeline as I'll believe it when I see it. The current plans call for mixed-use development and park space which I think would be amazing! There are many sites and posts about this development as everyone seems to have an opinion as to what should happen with this piece of land. They have recently filed a draft PUD and there have been more meetings so I am sticking to my last update that I will believe it when I see it.

REMINDER: Edgewood Neighborhood Cleanup TOMORROW!

Just wanted to send out a reminder that tomorrow is the Edgewood Neighborhood monthly cleanup. The group meets in front of the Edgewood Rec Center at the corner of 3rd and Evarts NE at 10:30 a.m. The cleanup is sponsored by the Friends of Edgewood Recreation Center and occurs the first Saturday of every month same time and location. The group picks up trash around the neighborhood including the rec center and has a cookout afterwards.

This is a great way to meet your neighbors and show pride in our neighborhood!

If you cannot come try and cleanup around your block today or tomorrow morning so we can cover more areas!!!

Chocolate City Beer Update

This post is long overdue! Chocolate City Beer has been up and brewing for months now and they keep expanding the list of locations where you can buy yourself a pint. The closest one to Edgewood is the Colonel Brooks Tavern in Brookland. I had a few pints of the ESB that is on tap there last week and really enjoyed it. I have also been told that they are planning to sell growlers hopefully starting this month!!

Ward 5 Redistricting and Edgewood

In case you have missed it there has been a series of posts on Greater Greater Washington the past three days on the Ward 5 redistricting maps and process. I encourage everyone to read them and comment.

Yesterday they posted a map which the authors of the posts thought would be best for the new ANCs and SMDs in Ward 5. They have grouped Edgewood with Eckington, Truxton Circle, Bates-Hanover and Bloomingdale. I think that Edgewood would be better served to be in the same ANC as Brookland. There are so many projects and developments on the Edgewood/Brookland border and Edgewood is constantly left out of the process. Many residents in Edgewood think they live in Brookland. I think that if we were in the same ANC it would allow the Edgewood neighborhood to have better representation and stop the overuse of the Brookland name for the projects/developments that are partially or even wholly in the Edgewood neighborhood.

The thing that I do really like is that Edgewood now has 3 SMDs that are pretty much all in its neighborhood boundaries. This is really a great thing for the neighborhood as before my SMD was half Eckington and half Edgewood in a weird "Z" shape across Rhode Island Avenue NE. I think that it would also help the Ward 5 ANCs be more even in size and give all of them an odd number of SMDs if Edgewood was with ANC 5C.

Geoffrey Hatchard was kind enough to provide me with a map for this post. The three Edgewood SMDs are a darker green/blue between the blue ANC 5B and the green ANC 5C. My thoughts are that we would be better off with the green ANC 5C, but I would really like to hear from fellow Edgewood neighbors on what they think.

What do you think? Please state in the comments your feelings on where Edgewood should end up in this redistricting process. Also please email our council member your thoughts and attend the meeting when it is announced.

DDOT Announces Solicitation of Bids for Construction of Rhode Island Avenue Pedestrian Bridge

Construction of Key Connection to Metropolitan Branch Trail to Begin Next Year(Washington, D.C.)

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced a solicitation of bids for the construction of a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over the CSX railroad tracks at the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station. The bridge links to the Metropolitan Branch Trail and will be a safe passageway for community members who currently use the Rhode Island Avenue underpass, which is narrow and dark, or who cross the active railroad tracks illegally. Combined with last year’s completion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail, from New York Avenue to Franklin Street, the bridge will also increase access to transit and recreation for thousands of residents.

The truss bridge is designed in the style of an old railroad bridge. The design is the result of unprecedented cooperation among numerous stakeholders including DDOT, WMATA, CSX, utility companies and the community. Following award of a construction contract, work could start sometime next year. Bids are due December 5, 2011. Bid documents are available at the OCP Bid Room on the 3rd floor of the Reeves Center at 2000 14th Street, NW.

For those of you not on the neighborhood listserv I wanted to share these notes from last week's PSA501 meeting from our neighbor to the south.

Metropolitan Police - PSA 501 Meeting Summary

Several Officers from MPD met with concerned community members during the normally scheduled PSA meeting on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Harry Thomas Recreation Center.

Topics discussed included:

·Homicide at Lincoln Rd. NE – the victim was a well known criminal from the Trinidad Area. MPD believes that the victim may had been responsible for some of the robberies that had been taking place in our area. The case is still under investigation and MPD continue to seek our any information from potential witnesses.
·Shooting at the 200 Q St NW. The shooting took place at the same location of a previous shooting earlier this year. It is possible that the shooting was drug related. If any neighbors have any further information or may have a security camera that may have recorded something, MPD would like to hear from you.
·Robberies have increased recently but are still lower than last year. Many robberies are taking place along N. Capitol St and Florida Avenue area. Usually people walking home from work or the metro. MPD urge residents to please not be distracted on their cell phones, texting, or reading email while walking home. Be aware of surroundings and avoid walking with head sets on that may prevent you from listening someone approaching. ·Burglaries – appears that the individuals doing some of the robberies in the evening are also carrying our the burglaries during the day. Remember to keep your windows locked, doors secured and valuables out of the front and back yard where they can be stolen. Also, please remember to lock your bicycles and remove the seat if possible.
·Arrests – MPD has conducted several arrests of burglaries in progress. 20 minutes prior to the PSA meeting, an arrest was made on Florida and N. Capitol St from a robbery in progress. MPD has also been conducting arrests for public urination, possession of open alcohol containers as well as trespassing.
·Focus – MPD is increasing bike patrols in the area. Currently, there are about 6 police officers on bike patrol, that number will be increased. Bike patrols will allow MPD to focus on the alleys and on groups hanging out in dark alleys during the day and night. MPD will also be adding additional resources to PSA 501 to focus on key areas (Truxton Circle). This weekend is also All Hands On Deck as well.
·Community Partnership – a member of the community suggested MPD doing more outreach to meet community residents. MPD suggested community restarting safety walks. Safety walks were successful this summer in bringing out neighbors and MPD and getting neighbors and officers acquainted. This is the fall season and great time for walks, so we hope neighbors will join us in staring neighborhood walks twice a week again.
·5th District Police Citizen’s Advisory Council Awards Dinner – on Thursday, October 27th, please join us to honor the men and women of the 5th District Police. The Awards Dinner will take place at the Navy Yard starting at 6:30pm. Tickets are $40.

While I work on that I wanted to share this graph which shows the number of bikeshare trips that started/ended at the Edgewood station on 4th and Adams Street NE. It looks like the Edgewood station use is growing along with bikeshare. I imagine it will pick up even more as stations are added in our area.

ZestFest continues all week, bringing arts, culture and music to the streets of NoMa through October 1! Events range from Zumba classes, Project Fitness demonstrations, lunch-time concerts, free chair massages, Rock Band 3 on a huge screen, and much more!

Still devastated about DC schools?

Last year I wrote about a program that I decided to volunteer with because I am disheartened about the state of DC schools especially the ones in my own neighborhood. So many times blogs are filled with pieces about gentrification and crime, but rarely are solutions or plans offered. While I am not saying that volunteering with Reading Partners will solve any of these larger problems I do think that it is an action that will change the life of a child and the volunteer. Imagine if all DC students read at or above their grade level and the impact that would have on their education and future.

I am starting my second year volunteering with Reading Partners and I am determined to recruit even more of our community to join!! The commitment is less than 2 hours a week including travel time and the lesson plans are already prepared for you. If you can read you can tutor and you can make a huge difference in the life of a child. The program has expanded to more schools this year and you can volunteer at any one of them.

ZestFest: Family Field Day, Concerts

This Saturday, Sept 24, NoMa BID is hosting Family Field Day in collaboration with CHNNA, the Capitol Hill North Neighborhood Association. ZestFest is providing outdoor games, face painting, food trucks, $10 screen-printed t-shirts designed by Albus Cavus, and dance and musical performances. CHNNA is providing a picnic for all those in attendance, and will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments, chips, plates, napkins, and drinks.

Neighbors may bring a side dish or dessert to share, as well as yard games. The more people that participate and contribute to Family Field Day, the more fun this will be for everyone involved. The family friendly event will offer games for both adults and kids, and evening concerts as well! Food trucks will also be in attendance, including That Cheesecake Truck and the Big Cheese Truck.

Saturday Rides on the Met Branch Trail -- First Ride This Saturday

With cooler weather in the forecast, the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association is sponsoring a series of Saturday morning bicycle rides on the Metropolitan Branch Trail. These weekly group rides will be a good way to get out on the Trail, have some fun, meet your neighbors, and get some exercise.

The first ride will take place this coming Saturday, September 17th from 9-10 AM. We'll meet at the Brookland Kiosk at the corner of 12th and Newton and ride from there to the entrance of the MBT on 8th Street under the Franklin Street Bridge. The ride will last approximately 1 hour and will be a round-trip distance of approximately 4-5 miles. And, when we're done, you'll still have the rest of your Saturday to devote to whatever you have planned.

Future rides will take place--same time, same meeting place--every Saturday morning as follows: Sept. 24; Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; Nov. 5. We hope you'll consider joining us for some, all, or as many rides as you'd like!

In our neighborhood, we have one of Washington`s most unique places, the McMillan Sand Filtration Site. This 25-acre site bounded by the unit blocks of Michigan Avenue and Channing Street NW and the 2500 through 2900 blocks of First Street NW and North Capitol Street is a mystery to many people. But it need not stay a mystery. To that end, I am pleased to announce that, by popular request, the Site will be open for tours this Saturday, September 17, 2011.

Tours will start at 11:00 a.m. and anyone is welcome (although I must admit that the site if not accessible for someone with a physical impairment). I have included below the waiver form that anyone attending the tour must fill out. So if you can fill out it, sign it, and e-mail it back to me, that would be great. You can also fill out it and bring it with you Saturday morning. That will save a lot of time.

I really encourage people to come and see McMillan, whether you have just moved here and have wondered what that lonely place is up First Street NW, or whether you have lived here all your life and know exactly what the Site is and was. It is both amazing and beautiful.

3. I hereby agree to abide by the orders and directions of the representative(s) of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (ODMPED) while visiting the Property. If I fail to comply with such orders or directions, ODMPED or its representatives may, in its discretion, demand that I leave the Property in which event I agree to do so immediately and without causing a disturbance.
4. I hereby acknowledge that the Property may be, either entirely or in part, in a state of disrepair or otherwise hazardous. I hereby assume all risks and accept full responsibility for any and all damage to myself or others arising from or related to my presence on the Property. I understand and agree that neither I, my heirs, personal representatives, successors, grantees, and assigns, or anyone claiming any interest through me, will bring any legal action whatsoever against the District, its officials, officers, employees, and agents as a result of any damage, injury, loss or death to myself or my property that arises out of my presence on the Property in connection with the tour.

Casey Trees brings Park(ing) Day to D.C.

Dupont Circle metered street parking to be transformed into temporary green space for one day.

(Washington, D.C. – September 8, 2011) — On Friday, Sept. 16, Casey Trees will transform impervious street parking into an instant park to promote the environmental, social and financial benefits of trees as part of Park(ing) Day 2011.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual event that brings together activists, artists and citizens to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into public parks and other social spaces all over the world. In 2010, more than 800 “PARK” installations in more than 80 cities in 30 countries were created. Casey Trees’ temporary park at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Q Street NW is slated to be the only officially recognized Park(ing) Day site in Washington, D.C.

“We are excited to take part in such a large, international effort to get people thinking about the environment,” said Mark Buscaino, Executive Director of Casey Trees. “This event provides us with a great opportunity to discuss the benefits of trees and the urban forest.”

Casey Trees’ park design will replace 320 square feet of impervious surface normally off limits to pedestrians with an abstract forest open to the public. Oversized tags will be attached to each tree touting the financial and environmental value trees bring to D.C. residents. Casey Trees staff will be onsite from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to answer tree related questions and distribute literature.

MuralsDC to Kick Off 5th Year with “The Art of Vandalism”

A Discussion with City Agencies & Graffiti Artists to Explore Lasting Solutions (Washington, DC) – MuralsDC will kick off its 2011 program with a panel discussion to explore the root of, and solutions for, graffiti Tuesday, July 26, from 6pm-8pm at Busboys & Poets (14 and V St., NW). The panel will feature former graffiti taggers, current artists and representatives of DC government agencies who abate graffiti and fund public art. The event will also feature a preview of the upcoming documentary film “The Red Line Project,” which explores the proliferation of graffiti that runs along Metrorail’s Red Line. “By the end of May, the Department of Public Works (DPW) had already responded to twice as many requests to remove graffiti as we completed in all of last year,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “While initiatives like MuralsDC have helped to keep repeatedly tagged walls graffiti-free, we need to get to the root of the problem to identify permanent solutions.”

MuralsDC was created to combat the rising tide of illegal graffiti. The program positively engages District youth by teaching proper art techniques. It also provides supplies and a legal means for youth to practice and perform their skill in a way that promotes respect for public and private property and community awareness. Through the program, more than 30 works of public art have been installed throughout the city. "The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) supports MuralsDC, because it sheds light on the artistic talents of graffiti artists,” said DCCAH Interim Director Ayris Scales. “We feel it's important to fund programs that allow young residents to express themselves legally and without the worry of repercussions. Whether someone is painting oil on canvas or aerosol spray on a wall, their art is an expression of themselves that should be valued." The panel will be moderated by Mazi Mutafa, who supervises the artwork for MuralsDC. Mutafa is the executive director of Words, Beats and Life, which provides an array of educational outreach programs to District youth and teaches them the art of “legal” graffiti.

MuralsDC was launched in 2007 by Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham. The program, coordinated by DCCAH and DPW, positively engages District youth by teaching proper art techniques and respect for public property. Throughout the summer, the program will install murals in Wards 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

PSA 501 Drug Free Zone

I just wanted to make the Eckington/Edgewood communities aware that the Chief of Police declared a Drug Free Zone in our neighborhood today, July 21st. It encompasses the area bounded by Adams Street, 4th Street, Rhode Island Avenue, 5th Street, V Street, and 3rd Street, Northeast and will run through June 25th.

Drug Free Zones are temporarily established to allow the enforcement of anti-loitering laws against groups believed to be involved in illicit drug activity. Also, this weekend MPD is working All Hands On Deck, which means there will be a lot of additional manpower and resources in our district.

If you've driven on Rhode Island Avenue over the last year or so, you may have noticed that sprawling parking lots near the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metro station have given way to construction sites, which are nearly looking like places where people might live and shop one day.

UrbanTurf recently spoke to Vicki Davis, president of Urban-Atlantic, who is developing the Rhode Island Row project, a large mixed-use project at 919 Rhode Island Avenue NE next to the Red Line station. Davis said that starting in October, the first of the project's 274 rental units will be ready for occupancy, and that potential tenants will be able to start looking at apartments in mid-August.

"We are planning on having our leasing staff start temporarily on site starting then," she said. "We'll be doing pre-marketing and hard-hat tours."

Split between two buildings (north and south), the apartments will be delivered in 30 to 40-unit phases, with subsequent deliveries scheduled for December, January, and March. (All of the units are expected to deliver by Summer 2013.) The first apartments will be in the north building located on Rhode Island Avenue, twenty percent of which will be offered at below market rates.

The two buildings will also have 70,000 square feet of retail between them, although the first establishments won't open until next March. For now, Urban-Atlantic is staying mum about potential tenants, waiting to make an announcement about retail offerings until the end of the year. However, the developer has reached out to the neighborhood for retail suggestions through the Rhode Island Insider blog. If these recommendations are taken into account, there will be sit-down restaurants, a coffee shop, a grocery store, a dry cleaners, and a mix of retail other than clothing and shoe stores.

In between the project's two buildings will be a road with three lanes of street parking, a pedestrian median, and sidewalk fronting retail. This section will include 42 parallel parking spaces, that will add to the north building's 168 public parking spots. (A new 212-space Metro parking garage is also scheduled to open in August.) The north building's garage will also include a public electric-car charging station. Both residential buildings will offer green roofs, with planting boxes designed to absorb rainwater to prevent runoff and help with insulation. The north building will have a rooftop terrace with fire pits and seating areas, and the south building will include a pool and fitness center.

Saturday, June 18th 2011 ( United Way NCA) and Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States are partnering to provide free health screens in Washington, D.C. This free event, Real Men Get Checked, is open to everyone. The event takes place from 10 am – 4 pm outside the D.C Armory, adjacent to RFK Stadium. In case of bad weather, the event will be inside Armory.

The screenings and counseling will be conducted by registered nurses, doctors and trained volunteers on: diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, glaucoma and eye exams, HIV / AIDS, nutrition and other related illnesses.

Calling all youth between the ages of 13 to 18 years old! The U.S. Attorney’s Office East of the River Community Prosecution Team want YOU to participate in an interactive youth summit entitled “Breaking the Silence on Youth Violence”. The goal of this summit is to “deal with the real” and address the senseless violence surrounding our youth. We recognize that a youth’s exposure to violence, whether as victims or witnesses, is often associated with long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Children exposed to violence are also at a higher risk of engaging in criminal behavior later in life and becoming part of a cycle of violence. We want to educate youth on how they can become part of the solution and help create safer neighborhoods by “breaking the silence on youth violence.”

CSX Holding up Pedestrian Bridge in Edgewood

CSX is holding up the building of the pedestrian bridge in Edgewood from the Met Branch Trail to the Rhode Island Avenue metro station. Last year I wrote about the planned bridge to improve safety and access to the metro station from Edgewood. Here is a link that shows the plans for the bridge and all the reasons that it is desperately needed! I wrote about the number of people that would dangerously cross the railroad tracks and get stuck in the barbwire cutting themselves. I have written multiple times about how the narrow sidewalks under the bridge and the decrepit staircase to the metro are dangerous for pedestrians.

The major hurdles such as designing the bridge, WMATA easements and funding are already accomplished leaving CSX as the last hurdle before DDOT can move the project forward. CSX must grant DC air rights to the space above their railroad tracks in order for the bridge to be built. CSX was very quick to erect prison-style chainlink and barbwire fencing around the tracks after the completion of the Met Branch Trail in Edgewood. Why now when there is a safer, more attractive alternative to crossing the tracks are they dragging their feet?

We must put pressure on them to move the project forward!! I have been emailing Harry Thomas Jr. and his staff about this for years now and have decided to move on to Tommy Wells to try and get this accomplished. Please email, tweet and call them both until something is done. The more voices and reminders the better!

I have been told that the Safeway space at the Rhode Island Avenue Shopping Center will be filled by a Big Lots this October. I tweeted this yesterday when I first found out and wondered if this meant we might have a chance at getting a Farmer's Market in Edgewood.

Kidical Mass DC: Family bike ride and pool party this Saturday, 6/18

Greetings, fellow Met Branch Trail users--

I am a Bloomingdale resident and mom of Alex (15 months); you may have seen us playing in our front yard near 1st & Randolph Streets NW or walking our dog Linus around the neighborhood.

This spring, I helped bring Kidical Mass , the national movement to promote family bicycling, to DC. After two successful rides in Capitol Hill, we're branching out! For our June ride this Saturday, we'll be riding en masse from Turkey Thicket Playground to the Mt. Rainier Bicycle Co-op and then on to the Prince George's Pool in Mt. Rainier, where we've scheduled a pool party from 12 - 4!

Since I'll be biking up from Bloomingdale myself, I wanted to extend an invitation to Bloomingdale, Eckington, and Edgewood families to ride with me up the Met Branch Trail as a biketrain to the Brookland meetup. You can meet us in front of the Big Bear Cafe in Bloomingdale or at the R Street NE entrance to the trail, where we'll take a minute to discuss the latest proposals for improving bike access to the trail on R Street. A bit further up the trail, we'll meet up with Stephen Miller of Rails to Trails Conservancy, who were instrumental in getting the trail built. Rails to Trails is generously donating bottled water for this Saturday's ride.

Kidical Mass is a great opportunity to meet other cycling families and practice safe cycling skills for parents and children alike. You don't even have to participate in the main ride in order to join the Met Branch biketrain! A Conversation with the Community About the McMillan Sand Filtration Site

We are meeting with the residents of Bloomingdale, Stronghold, Franklin Commons, and Park Place and to bring them up to date about what is going on at the McMillan Site and to get your feedback and opinions about how the ANC should address important issues regarding this major development. Met Branch Trail Safety Response From MPD

Dear MBT Community,

First, I apologize for the delay in responding, I've been on vacation for the last week,

Next let me apologize on behalf of MPD for the comment that an officer reportedly made advising a victim to avoid using the trail. That is neither the Department's position, nor mine, and I have been on record here encouraging people to use the trail - as I myself do - and I will continue to do so. I'm also addressing this issue with all of my officers.

I will continue to advise the members of this group of any occurrences on the trail. In analyzing the recent crimes, it is correct that in the past most issues were north of Rhode Island Ave. in the Edgewood area; however, these events in the last few weeks have been south of Rhode Island Ave.

I am attaching several maps that show robberies and assaults occurring within 200 feet of the trail, 300 feet, and in the area as a whole in the last 60 days to give some perspective on these events (these maps were pulled on June 3rd).

As far as the "address" of the trail, our dispatchers should be able to recognize the MBT and dispatch to it. Their systems have been updated and I understand they are in the process of training all operators. I believe they need a cross street for an exact location – this is the same process they use for our interstate highways that don't have a "proper" address.

We do have signs showing those streets that intersect with the trail; however, there are some portions where the trail does not physically intersect and we are working on ideas to get those areas marked properly.

The location, description, and M.O. of the assailants leads us to believe that these crimes were perpetrated by single suspect / group of suspects. We have identified some persons of interest and are currently investigating. We will also continue enhanced patrol of the trail and are working on implementing an additional action plan.

Finally let me say that I am very encouraged by the dedication to the trail that this community has shown, and I hope you continue to work proactively to improve it. Please continue to reach out to me and MPD with any ideas, suggestions, concerns, or requests.

NAACP DC AND UNITY HEALTH CARE COMMEMORATE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST AIDS DIAGNOSIS IN THE U.S.

WASHINGTON, DC —The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People DC Branch (NAACP DC) and Unity Health Care will host a health summit on Saturday, June 4 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first AIDS diagnosis in the United States.

“It is thirty years later and HIV/AIDS continues to ravage the African-American community,” said NAACP DC Health Chair Sable K. Nelson. “It is important to promote prevention education, treatment adherence, and frequent testing. Being vigilant with this major health issue can begin to decrease the impact HIV/AIDS has in the District and beyond."

Nelson added that HIV/AIDS is a preventable disease. “Everyone can do their part by becoming educated and knowing their HIV status.”

NAACP DC recently joined the 10-city “Let It Rise” tour—sponsored by the national NAACP—which brings HIV/AIDS to the forefront of our communities. The health fair component of the tour also is a part of this strategic collaboration.

“Not only does one of the nation’s most celebrated cities have the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the country, but it also faces alarming rates of heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension,” said NAACP DC President Akosua Tyus. “As one of the branch’s strategic priorities, NAACP DC chooses to fight obesity through promoting overall health and wellness to overcome these other illnesses plaguing our community. This health fair is fitting for anyone who wants to learn more about leading a much healthier lifestyle.”

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the Unity Health Care facility located at 3924 Minnesota Ave. NE (near the Minnesota Avenue metro station) from 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. There will be free HIV testing, HIV/AIDS educational sessions, health exhibits, physical fitness activities, music, and food. NAACP DC anticipates attendees will walk away equipped with HIV/AIDS resources and share the information with their family and friends.

ICYMI: Rhode Island Station is now Rhode Island Row

In case you missed it I have been meaning to post that Rhode Island Station has been re-branded as Rhode Island Row. I preferred the old name, but I heard they thought it was confusing with the metro station. The website has changed to www.rhodeislandrow.com and it is not as detailed as the previous website. The website says that they are opening this summer and the default date on the residency inquiry is June 16th. I don't think they will be done by then although the metro parking garage is looking very close to completion.
