MONROE STREET MARKET PRESENTS DINNER AND A MOVIE ON THE ARTS WALK

--Special Halloween Movie on October 30--

 

WHAT:            On the last Friday of October, guests and residents will be invited to the Arts Walk at Monroe Street Market to enjoy “Dinner and a Movie”.  The featured movie to celebrate Halloween will be Edward Scissorhands. Participating restaurants will feature special promotions while a free outdoor movie is shown beginning at dusk. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair. All guests will receive a free bag of popcorn provided by Monroe Street Market.

October Community Cleanup -- tomorrow!

Dear neighbors:

You're cordially invited to join tomorrow's monthly Edgewood Cleanup! Meet in front of the Rec. Center (3rd and Evarts NE) -- Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 AM -- rain or shine! Free refreshments for volunteers.

This month's cleanup is again joined by Edgewood's own Beacon House. This local nonprofit serves local at-risk youth through sports (football!) programs at the Rec. Center, homework assistance, mentoring, nutritious meals, and more. We hope you can join too!

The cleanup is sponsored by the Friends of Edgewood, with special help from the Beacon House children's charity this month. It starts here the first Saturday of every month, and we provide bags, gloves, and snacks. All are welcome to meet friendly neighbors, clear litter from our community, and stay informed. If you can't make it, tidying outside your house helps too. Questions? P.S. -- Our first two outdoor movie screenings -- The Princess Bride, and Jurassic Park, as determined by YOUR VOTES! -- were popular community events, where the Met Branch Trail goes past the Rhode Island Ave. shopping center. Both were preceded by short films about other DC nonprofits' great work.

Reminder SMD 5E10 Meeting TONIGHT

I wanted to send out a reminder about tonight's SMD meeting from 7-9 p.m. at Inspired Teaching School (200 Douglas Street NE).  We have a lot on the agenda including DPR update about the Edgewood Recreation Center and update from MRP about the RIA Shopping Center redevelopment.  Please join in the discussion so your opinions/thoughts and ideas can be heard and shared.

AARP Foundation Announces A Celebration of Service on September 11

Hello!

 

AARP Foundation will be packing over 1 million meals next Friday on the National Mall and we would love to be included in your daybook. The meals will be distributed to struggling seniors, first responders, and veterans. D.C. has one of the highest rates of seniors living in poverty, with 13.4 percent of all households in the area considered food insecure. 

 

Volunteers are encouraged to participate and join members from the community, government, local universities, non-profits, and members of the armed services to pay tribute to the service commitment that is now such an important part of September 11^th.

Community Cleanup Tomorrow -- with dog park petition!

Dear Friends (and movie night voters!):

**We will also have the petitions to add a dog park among the new Rec. Center's amenities. Our groups has collected about 50 signatures so far... Walk by with your dog at 10:30 to sign the petition, and learn about the status, if nothing else!!**

Autobody Paint Facility Permit Rulemaking - Update and Hearing

Subject: Autobody Paint Facility Permit Rulemaking - Update and Hearing

Dear Commissioners and Concerned Residents:

 

The Council of the District of Columbia (the Council) recently passed two laws that affect business and residents throughout Ward 5. Bill 21-0281 the “Ward 5 Paint Spray Booth Moratorium Emergency Act of 2015” and Bill 21-282 the “Ward 5 Paint Spray Booth Moratorium Temporary Act of 2015” prohibit the permitting of any additional automobile paint spray operations in Ward 5 as well as the issuance of permit renewals for facilities with permits expiring between July 23, 2015 and March 14, 2016. 

 

Mayor Bowser has directed the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) to conduct a comprehensive review of the spray booth permitting process and revise our regulations to address the concerns raised by the legislation. All unpermitted facilities have been directed to cease operations. Any facility with a permit that expires during the moratorium period will be required to cease operations when their permit expires. If any auto body painting occurs at a facility operating without an active permit, they may be subject to fines or other penalties.

 

The moratorium extends through March 14, 2016.  

 

To obtain stakeholder input on the contents of revised regulations, DOEE will host a public outreach meeting on September 29, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.

All interested parties are welcome to provide input.  Examples of regulation revisions DDOE is considering and seeks input on are as follows:

 

1)    Adoption of more stringent volatile organic compound (VOC) paint content standards currently in place in California and some other states;

2)    Possible VOC emission control strategies such as the use of carbon filters, carbon cartridges, carbon beds, or other control methods;

3)    Emission stack parameters, such as height restrictions;

4)    Paint booth design parameters; or

5)    Any other emission or odor control strategies that might be suggested at the stakeholder meeting.
