July 28th Safety Meeting Recap

Sorry for the delay in posting but getting caught up today.

On July 28th there was a community safety meeting that was really well-run if not quite as well-attended as expected.  Here are some of the key points that I wanted to share.

1) Our PSA area has relatively low crime and is not one of the targeted areas for extra police presence this year.
2) Many of the that break-ins occurred had access gained by unlocked doors or windows. (PLEASE LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS! Make it as difficult as possible for someone to access your home or car.)
3) When there is an increase in break-ins to houses or cars it is often caused by one person or group and once they are caught and arrested crimes stop.  If break-ins start back up MPD looks to see who was recently released.
4) Many neighbors expressed interest in a Neighborhood Watch Training in the neighborhood and it is being organized.
5) Vacant properties become problem properties-  a list of them was collected and reported to DCRA (311) to make sure that they are secured.  If you see people in vacant properties call 911 every time.
6)  Call 911 whenever you see something suspicious.  If you don't want to call you can text information to 50411 and MPD will respond to the text as well.
7) There was concern of lighting issues in the neighborhood and these areas were reported to DDOT.

The tone of the meeting was great as everyone shared their concerns and action plans were created.  I will let everyone know when the Neighborhood Watch Training is scheduled.  In the mean time please keep an eye out for your neighbors and report everything.  The squeaky wheel gets the grease in DC.

Edgewood Neighborhood Cleanup TOMORROW

Tomorrow, Saturday, August 2 is the monthlyEdgewood neighborhood cleanup and BBQ. It is on rain or shine, so long as there isn't lightning or soaking monsoon conditions. Please come out and join your neighbors if you can.

We meet in front of the Rec. Center (300Evarts St. NEat 10:30. The cleanup is sponsored by the Friends of EdgewoodRecreation Center, and occurs the first Saturday of each month at this time and place. We provide bags and gloves, and plus food afterward, around noon. Come join friendly neighbors old and new, to clear litter from our neighborhood and chat about local news, etc. Free food and drink for volunteers.

You're invited to stop by and say HI, even if you only have a little time and can't stick around for lunch, or can only help for a couple minutes. If you can't come out at all, keeping the area around your house clean helps us cover more areas!
Please spread the word. Here also is our freemembership signup form -- pls. forward to other neighbors who might like to get involved.

Little Free Library

I wanted to let everyone know that there is a little free library in the neighborhood.  After seeing these all around I decided to add one to our neighborhood for everyone to enjoy and use.  The concept is simple you build a structure to hold books and anyone can come by and borrow a book or return a book.  They are all over the world and a map is available on the website.  I have submitted mine but it takes awhile for them to add them.  So if you have not been down Ascot Place in a while please feel free to stop by and grab a book.

Let me know if you have any questions!  Also happy to help if any other neighbors want to add another little free library!
