Ward 5 Technology Meeting hosted by the Office of the Chief Technology Officer

We are hosting a community meeting on behalf of the Office of the Chief Technology Officer around the Connect.DC program on Tuesday at the Trinidad Recreation Center. We would appreciate your help spreading the word and welcome you to attend as well.

Connect.DC created the Connected Communities Initiative (CCI) to increase Internet access and use by residents, businesses and community institutions in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods in the District of Columbia. The first phase of CCI began by focusing on neighborhood clusters--“digital footprints”--in Ward 7 and 8 and we are planning to expand the initiative to other neighborhoods over the next year.

We are inviting residents and community leaders to share their thoughts about how they currently use technology and provide feedback on ways to get more people in their neighborhoods to use it. This community conversation will also give participants an opportunity to ask the Connect.DC team questions about current programs and join our efforts to bring tech training and access to all DC residents.

Neighborhood cleanup TOMORROW

Hi neighbors, you're invited to join a truly constructive community volunteer project!

We're building sturdy, attractive benches for the pocket park at 2nd and Channing Streets NE, along Lincoln road. These are cool planter benches, with built-in flower beds to enliven this triangle park with seasonal color while giving folks a place to enjoy the green space. (The built-in planters will also protect the plants from accidental mowing. 😉)

Meet in front of Edgewood Rec Center (300 Evarts St. NEtomorrow morning at 10:30 -- same place and time as our monthly cleanups. Then volunteers will do a mini neighborhood cleanup along the short walk to the pocket park, which we've been beautifying.

We'd love your help with assembling the benches in the pocket park or cleaning up litter from the surrounding blocks. Gloves, bags, and refreshments provided.

We've purchased all necessary materials (your contributions at work!), and have the proper tools (thanks Michael!) DPR is accepting the benches as a donation for community benefit. If you have questions, just ask organizer sally.hobaugh@gmail.com

Hope to see ya tomorrow, and happy Labor Day!

Live DC Bald Eagle Nest Camera!

DISTRICT’S FIRST SOLAR POWERED EAGLE’S NEST CAMERAS
GO LIVE AT U.S. NATIONAL ARBORETUM

(WASHINGTON, DC) February 16, 2016 — Eagles have landed again at the U.S. National Arboretum, and for the first time, the public can view them via a pair of newly installed eagle nest cams. The bonded bald eagle pair has returned to the same nest where they successfully raised their eaglet last year. Dubbed “Mr. President” and “The First Lady,” they are the first mated pair to nest at the National Arboretum since 1947.

The eagle nest cams, which were installed by the American Eagle Foundation in cooperation with National Arboretum, can be viewed 24 hours a day at www.eagles.org/dceaglecam. The cameras are powered completely by a large solar array designed by Alfred State College, SUNY College of Technology, and were partially funded by the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE).

“We are honored to be a part of this exciting project that is connecting residents directly with our local wildlife,” said DOEE Director Tommy Wells. “That the eagles are breeding again this year—and are subsisting off fish caught in the Anacostia River—is a strong testament to the significant commitment the District has made to restoring and protecting our urban environment for future generations.”

“These nest cameras give us an intimate look into the life of bald eagles in the nation’s capital,” said DOEE Wildlife Biologist Dan Rauch. “They are an invaluable tool for research and environmental education, as well as statement about the amazing wildlife in urban areas.”

"The First Lady" laid her first egg of 2016 on February 10th and her second on February 14th. Both parents will carefully incubate the eggs, which are expected to hatch about 35 days after being laid.

Installing cameras protects the nesting pair by allowing people to view them while minimizing disturbances from park visitors. People, noise, and other distractions could cause the nesting pair to abandon their nest and eggs. Access to the area within approximately 660 feet around the nesting site is restricted during the critical nesting period.

Safety, Traffic, Parking and Schools -January 20th at 7 p.m.

Dear Edgewood Community,

As you may know, there have been many traffic-related issues that have disturbed our community since the beginning of this school year. We recently met to discuss how we can all work as a community to solve these problems.
Inspired Teaching School is deeply troubled by these issues, and has directly intervened in a number of ways. The following is a list of tactics, each attempted many times since August 2015:
·
Announcements and discussions on the school listserve
·         Weekly reminders in the Head of School Newsletter and Principal Newsletters
·         A lengthy lecture regarding traffic DOs and DONTs at Back to School Night
·         Calls to police station to request a presence in the mornings
·         Requests/petitions for a crossing guard
·         More staff and parent volunteers working to support the morning drop-off process
·         Placement of orange traffic cones to direct traffic flow
·         A parent-led initiative for a Traffic Calming Application to the city for our street
·         Increased coordination with Lee Montessori regarding their families
·         The school issued “tickets” to offenders

Collectively, we believe that all stakeholders must have an opportunity to be heard, and the various District agencies that may be able to help must be able to see a unified request for resources and support. That is why we have agreed to a joint meeting to further discuss potential resolutions, to take place on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 (7pm) – hosted at Inspired Teaching School. We are working to ensure the participation of many District agencies, including: MPD, WMATA, PCSB, DDOT, the Mayor’s office, Councilman McDuffie’s office, and more.

We are inviting all neighbors, school families, and community members to attend this meeting and help us work toward a solution. The school and the community have very similar interests as far as traffic flow and safe neighborhood conditions are concerned, and we look forward to collaboratively problem-solving this issue with the public and the government agencies who may find ways to support us.

Thank you so much for your patience and your support as we attempt to make our neighborhood safer and less congested for the benefit of everyone. Please know that we have been aware of the traffic issues, and have been working tirelessly to address them. We care about our community, and we are committed to making it better. Hope to see you on January 20th at 7pm!

Best,
Sally Hobaugh, ANC 5E10

DC Council Unanimously Passes Councilmember Charles Allen’s Bill to Jumpstart Home and Business Security Camera Rebate Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 5, 2016
Contact: Laura Marks

WASHINGTON, DC – At today’s legislative meeting of the DC Council, Councilmembers voted unanimously to pass Councilmember Charles Allen’s bill, the Private Security Camera System Incentive Program Emergency Act of 2016, to create an incentive program for residents and neighborhood establishments to purchase and install security camera systems.

Councilmember Allen said, “It is clear that security cameras deter crime and help MPD hold individuals accountable for criminal acts by adding extra eyes on the street. This program will put cameras where they’re needed most by targeting the highest crime areas in each Ward and nearly doubling the number of maximum rebates available.”

Councilmember Allen added, “I’m grateful for the support of the entire Council and Mayor Bowser for this program. This $500,000 investment is an important step toward safer streets in neighborhoods across the city.”

The Council passed Councilmember Allen’s bill as introduced. The Private Security Camera System Incentive Program Emergency Act nearly doubles the number of maximum rebates possible, while maintaining a generous incentive: Up to $200 per camera installed and registered, with a maximum rebate of $500 per residential property and $750 per business, nonprofit, or religious institution, which often have a larger property footprint. Councilmember Allen’s effort also ensures that the highest crime area in each Ward receives priority for rebates, extends the length of time funds are available, and extends eligibility for the rebates to nonprofit organizations.
