Big Week for Edgewood

Tonight is the meeting for the surplusing of the Edgewood Shaed Elementary School Building.  It is important that everyone attend to give their input of what happens to the building.  I have been advocating for turning it into a Recreation Center/Nonprofit building which would host classes and activities for the community.  Others in the neighborhood would like it to become a charter school and with all the new children in the neighborhood that idea has merits as well especially if a quality school would like to open.
The meeting is at the Edgewood Recreation Center hosted by DGS.

For those of you that do not follow me on Twitter-  I wanted to add a blog post about the starting of construction of the pedestrian bridge for the Metropolitan Branch Trail to the Rhode Island Avenue metro station.  Ever since I moved to Edgewood over 5 years ago now I have been following the developments around this much needed bridge and how it will change the daily lives of so many of my neighbors for the better!  I have been pushing DDOT, the DC Council members and mayor for a start date and this week it is happening!  The bridge should be completed by December 2014/February 2015.  The project has its own website so we can follow the progress -   http://rhodeislandavepedbridge.com/_layouts/15/start.aspx#/SitePages/Home.aspx

Two of the biggest issues in Edgewood are moving forward this week which is really exciting!

Biking in Edgewood and Beyond

The evolution of my life with a bicycle began as it did for many children with a tricycle and then the upgrade to a two-wheeler with training wheels.  I will never forget the first day I rode without the training wheels as I donned a cape and was simultaneously angry and excited when I realized that my dad had let go and I was riding on my own!  As a child I rode my bike with my friends everywhere- to each other's houses, to the pool and to the store.  We never really thought about it as transportation just as freedom to go where we wanted without adults and mostly fun.  Once I got my driving license the car became our freedom as we could travel further and faster leaving my bike behind.  In college I was able to walk everywhere and that became my main method of transportation.  They also made all the buses free in Chapel Hill while I was there so riding the bus was the best and cheapest way to travel further distances.

When I moved up to the DC area after school for a job I fell in love with being able to walk or take public transportation everywhere.  I bought a new bike, but this time it was a road bike for exercise.  I would ride with my boyfriend for the sole purpose of working out.  Then I moved into DC proper and decided to go carfree.  A few years later Capital Bikeshare came and I joined right away.  I have grown to realize that biking in the city was not as scary as I thought it was once I was not clipped into my road bike's pedals.  I still plan out my routes well in advance, try to use bike lanes or paths as much as possible and ask other cyclists' advice on the best way to go.  In Edgewood we are really lucky to have the Met Branch Trail allowing the beginning and end of most bike trips to be off road.  This year I bought my own city bike with a basket for my dog and now we ride everywhere.  So it looks like I have come full circle with my biking as I now use it once again for transportation and freedom.  I have been reminded of how much fun a bike ride with friends can be just like it was as a child.  I am constantly asking neighbors if they bike and want to go on various rides.

In fact there are two rides this weekend that I and some Edgewood neighbors will be doing.  Please send me an email if you want to join us!

Tonight leaving Edgewood at 7:30 p.m. to do the BicycleSpace Kingman Island Ride and Luau

Nice park NoMa, but where's the bike ramp?

Recently NoMa BID has released renderings for a park that they would like to build in the middle of L Street NE and they have also been circulating a petition asking for 18 million dollars from the city to help them add parks to NoMa.  First let me say that I love the NoMa BID- their movie nights, concerts, flowers and keeping the area clean.  However,  I have a couple of concerns.  The BID was created to accomplish all these things and you can tell how great the NoMa area is because of it.  Ward 5 does not have any BIDs and could really use that money to do many of the same improvements to Rhode Island Ave NE.  Also, when looking at the renderings for the park in the middle of L Street I do not see the new ramp that DDOT is working on that will go from the Met Branch Trail to L Street.  That ramp is needed as the stairs that are currently there are not adequate for biking traffic and were only meant to be temporary until a ramp was built.  With the new cycletracks coming to NoMa and the work on the Met Branch Trail connections up to Union Station it is very important that we ensure this ramp is built.  I am in favor of NoMa parks I just want to ensure that they do not interfere with the Met Branch Trail infrastructure.  Being able to enter and exit the Met Branch Trail on both M and L Street via ramp will greatly improve the riding experience from all directions, as well as, help relieve congestion as the trail grows in popularity.

Please check out the renderings of the proposed park here and let NoMa know they need to include the ramp to the Met Branch Trail!!

Edgewood Development Update

Just a glance around Edgewood and you can see all the ongoing construction with developments completing and new neighbors and businesses moving into the neighborhood.  I feel like a broken record trying to get these developments to acknowledge that they are in Edgewood! So below are the updates of the developments ongoing in the Edgewood neighborhood for your reading pleasure.

Chancellor's Row (3015 4th Street NE) - 10-acre residential development on St. Paul's campus which began construction Fall 2010 as promised and already has residents living there. They have sold all 100 houses in Phase I and they will all be complete and occupied by May. Phase 2 starts construction in April and is currently open for sales having already sold 29 houses.  They have already added a ZipCar to this location and they are supposed to be adding a Capital Bikeshare Station as well.

Monroe Street Market (formerly CUA South Campus Development) (7th Street and Michigan Ave NE) - mixed use development will include approximately 720 housing units, 45 townhouses, and a public square with a college main street with 83,000 square feet of street-level retail, 15,000 square feet of artists' studio space and 850 below-grade parking spaces. They started demolition on the CUA buildings in 2010 and broke ground on November 9, 2011. The first phase of 562 residential units is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2013. There will also be improvements made to the sidewalks, crosswalks and Met Branch Trail connection in that area.

Brookland Artspace Lofts (3225 Eighth Street NE) - 41 live/work rental units directly adjacent to Dance Place's HQ and studio space for qualified DC artists making 60% or less of the area median income construction began Spring 2010 and is completed and at 100% occupancy now. They are accepting applications for their wait list.

Developments Surrounding Edgewood

Rhode Island Row (919 Rhode Island Ave NE) - This project is well underway and already has residents moving in as the apartments are completed. They have posted the rents and they range from $1740 for a 1 bed/bath to $3465 for a 3 bed/bath. The retail is still being kept pretty hushed even though it was supposed to be anounced the end of last year and open Spring 2012 it is rumored to have over 60% of the space "spoken for". I have only heard that CVS, Five Guys, Dunkin Donuts, DMV and Sprint are going to open over there.  The CVS "coming soon" sign is up on the corner retail slot on Rhode Island Avenue NE.  This development is also supposed to add a Capital Bikeshare Station.

Mint Condos (329 Rhode Island Ave NE) - This project is currently underway and is across the street from Edgewood in Eckington. The burnt out shell of a building is being converted into 24 luxury condos priced between mid $250,000 and mid $300,000. The building is also supposed to include five retail units and is currently selling. The last I heard they had 4 condos already under contract. They are close to being finished and it looks great with the new fence and landscaping.

901 Monroe Street NE - This project was recently approved by the zoning commission across the street in Brookland and looks promising. The plans are to demolish the current buildings and build 212 Apartments, 16 units at below market rents, and 13,000 sq. ft. of neighborhood-serving retail including a restaurant. Groundbreaking is scheduled for Fall 2012.

Washington Gateway (Intersection of New York Ave and Florida Ave NE) - This project which has been recently revived and modified to include more residential instead of a hotel will connect NoMa with the Eckington neighborhood. A huge empty 3 acre lot will be transformed into office space and residential with a small retail component. There will be improvements made to the Met Branch Trail which will connect to this development. The groundbreaking is supposed to happen before the end of the year for Phase One which is a building with 400 residential units and 5,200 sq. ft. of retail.

NoMa West (Eckington Place and Q Street NE) - This development broke ground in March 2011 and they have been hard at work with construction ever since. There will be a total of three buildings when they are completed and a small amount of retail. There will be an extension of Q street, a pedestrian walkway and connection with the Met Branch Trail included in the project.  Apartments are scheduled to be available starting in Fall 2012.

McMillan Sand Filtration (North Capitol Street, Michigan Ave, 1 Street NW) - This huge 25 acre site has been the focus of many meetings and plans over the years and I'll put its timeline as I'll believe it when I see it. The current plans call for mixed-use development and park space which I think would be amazing! There are many sites and posts about this development as everyone seems to have an opinion as to what should happen with this piece of land. They have recently filed a draft PUD and there have been more meetings so I am sticking to my last update that I will believe it when I see it.

DDOT Announces Solicitation of Bids for Construction of Rhode Island Avenue Pedestrian Bridge

Please see the press release below about the pedestrian bridge from the Met Branch Trail to the Rhode Island Ave metro station!!!  It looks like we could have it built and maybe even finished next year!!!!

DDOT Announces Solicitation of Bids for Construction of Rhode Island Avenue Pedestrian Bridge

Construction of Key Connection to Metropolitan Branch Trail to Begin Next Year(Washington, D.C.)

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced a solicitation of bids for the construction of a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over the CSX railroad tracks at the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station. The bridge links to the Metropolitan Branch Trail and will be a safe passageway for community members who currently use the Rhode Island Avenue underpass, which is narrow and dark, or who cross the active railroad tracks illegally. Combined with last year’s completion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail, from New York Avenue to Franklin Street, the bridge will also increase access to transit and recreation for thousands of residents.

The truss bridge is designed in the style of an old railroad bridge. The design is the result of unprecedented cooperation among numerous stakeholders including DDOT, WMATA, CSX, utility companies and the community. Following award of a construction contract, work could start sometime next year. Bids are due December 5, 2011. Bid documents are available at the OCP Bid Room on the 3rd floor of the Reeves Center at 2000 14th Street, NW.

For procurement information contact Bernetha Armwood at (202) 671-1563. For technical information contact Mr. Mohamed Dahir at (202) 671-4617.

The Metropolitan Branch Trail is a multi-use trail that runs from Union to Silver Spring, linking people to jobs, schools, stores and mass transit. Three miles of the planned trail have been completed to date.

Saturday Rides on the Met Branch Trail -- First Ride This Saturday

With cooler weather in the forecast, the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association is sponsoring a series of Saturday morning bicycle rides on the Metropolitan Branch Trail. These weekly group rides will be a good way to get out on the Trail, have some fun, meet your neighbors, and get some exercise.

The first ride will take place this coming Saturday, September 17th from 9-10 AM. The ride will last approximately 1 hour and will be a round-trip distance of approximately 4-5 miles. And, when we're done, you'll still have the rest of your Saturday to devote to whatever you have planned.

Future rides will take place--same time, same meeting place--every Saturday morning as follows: Sept. 24; Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; Nov. 5. We hope you'll consider joining us for some, all, or as many rides as you'd like!

I'm attaching a flyer with more information. Many thanks go to Jenny Isaacs for her graphic design of the flyer. Thanks, too, to Jake Abbott of Abbott Klar for providing us with multiple copies of it for posting and distribution. Please help us spread the word.

CALLING ALL CURATORS | 5x5 Public Art Project

I am wondering if this is what those five concrete spaces being built along the Met Branch Trail near the Rhode Island Avenue Shopping Center entrance will be used for?

CSX Holding up Pedestrian Bridge in Edgewood

CSX is holding up the building of the pedestrian bridge in Edgewood from the Met Branch Trail to the Rhode Island Avenue metro station.  Last year I wrote about the planned bridge to improve safety and access to the metro station from Edgewood.  Here is a link that shows the plans for the bridge and all the reasons that it is desperately needed!  I wrote about the number of people that would dangerously cross the railroad tracks and get stuck in the barbwire cutting themselves.  I have written multiple times about how the narrow sidewalks under the bridge and the decrepit staircase to the metro are dangerous for pedestrians.

The major hurdles such as designing the bridge, WMATA easements and funding are already accomplished leaving CSX as the last hurdle before DDOT can move the project forward.  CSX must grant DC air rights to the space above their railroad tracks in order for the bridge to be built.  CSX was very quick to erect prison-style chainlink and barbwire fencing around the tracks after the completion of the Met Branch Trail in Edgewood.  Why now when there is a safer, more attractive alternative to crossing the tracks are they dragging their feet?

We must put pressure on them to move the project forward!!  I have been emailing Harry Thomas Jr. and his staff about this for years now and have decided to move on to Tommy Wells to try and get this accomplished.  Please email, tweet and call them both until something is done.  The more voices and reminders the better!

Kidical Mass DC: Family bike ride and pool party this Saturday, 6/18

Greetings, fellow Met Branch Trail users--

I am a Bloomingdale resident and mom of Alex (15 months); you may have seen us playing in our front yard near 1st & Randolph Streets NW or walking our dog Linus around the neighborhood.

This spring, I helped bring Kidical Mass , the national movement to promote family bicycling, to DC. After two successful rides in Capitol Hill, we're branching out! For our June ride this Saturday, we'll be riding en masse from Turkey Thicket Playground to the Mt. Rainier Bicycle Co-op and then on to the Prince George's Pool in Mt. Rainier, where we've scheduled a pool party from 12 - 4!

Since I'll be biking up from Bloomingdale myself, I wanted to extend an invitation to Bloomingdale, Eckington, and Edgewood families to ride with me up the Met Branch Trail as a biketrain to the Brookland meetup. You can meet us in front of the Big Bear Cafe in Bloomingdale or at the R Street NE entrance to the trail, where we'll take a minute to discuss the latest proposals for improving bike access to the trail on R Street. A bit further up the trail, we'll meet up with Stephen Miller of Rails to Trails Conservancy, who were instrumental in getting the trail built. Rails to Trails is generously donating bottled water for this Saturday's ride.

Kidical Mass is a great opportunity to meet other cycling families and practice safe cycling skills for parents and children alike. You don't even have to participate in the main ride in order to join the Met Branch biketrain! Full details on the ride, including times, locations, and PG Pool admission information, are available on the Kidical Mass DC website at KidicalMassDC.blogspot.com. Feel free to email me at this address or at KidicalMassDC@gmail.com if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Sincerely,

Megan Odett
(+Tony, Alex and Linus the Wonderpuppy)

PS:  Because they are awesome, Rails to Trails is also helping to organize the following Met Branch Trail events:

*** MBT Safety Open House on June 22

*** Black Women Bike ride and clinic on June 25

Met Branch Trail Safety Meeting June 22nd

Please see the following announcement about a community meeting on the Met Branch Trail to discuss safety concerns.

Had enough with crime on the Met Branch Trail?

There are plenty of issues to address:

*** 911 dispatching
*** MPD response
*** Volunteer patrols
*** Lighting
*** Safe behavior to reduce risk

Join us on the evening of Wednesday, June 22 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the S Street pocket park on the trail, at 4th & S Streets NE.

We've invited representatives from MPD, DDOT, and the surrounding neighborhoods to join us - and most importantly, we're inviting you to drop in!

As we all continue to work to make the trail a safer place, let's use the opportunity to meet face-to-face on the trail, share effective strategies and make new allies.

PS: After the open house, head down to NoMa's Summer Screen showing of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, just off the MBT at L and 2nd Streets NE. More info: http://www.nomabid.org/event-info/noma-summer-screen/

PPS: Join Black Women Bike: DC for a ride of the Met Branch Trail a few days later, on Saturday, June 25! More info: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=226868380658025
