Art on 8th: Dance Place continues its series of free creative events throughout September, 2013

Dance Place in partnership with CulturalDC and Monroe Street Market expands its indoor dance performance series with interdisciplinary arts events entitled Art on 8th, which include events in the NE and NW quadrants of Washington, DC. 

Art on 8th is designed to bring people of all ages, backgrounds and interests together to enjoy and experience interactive programs of music, dance and visual arts.

All events are free, open to the public. September 2013 events in the Art on 8th NE program take place on 8th Street North East on the Arts Plaza and Dance Place’s Studio 21 on the Arts Walk at Monroe Street Market and at Dance Place, 3225 8th Street NE.

Art on 8th NE continues until October 26, 2013, featuring music on Thursday evenings, interactive dance concerts with dance sessions on Friday evenings and arts/crafts workshops on Saturdays.

Art on 8th NW continues on October 26,2013 with activities supporting the forthcoming Dancing the Dream exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

 

About the Art on 8th Program

The Art on 8th program is made possible by funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town program, as well as partnerships with CulturalDC, Monroe Street Market (Bozzuto Group/Abdo Development), the National Portrait Gallery and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

Dance Place's Art on 8th is part of the organization's Program Enhancement Fund, a $500,000 multi-year initiative to offer expanded free community arts and cultural programming. The Program Enhancement Fund is an integral aspect of Dance Place'sMoving Forward campaign, which also includes renovations the Dance Place's facility and enhanced operational reserves.

From August 2013 until March 2014 the Dance Place theater on 8th Street NE will be closed for major renovations. During that time Dance Place’s performance program will continue in other venues around DC, including Monroe Street Market Arts Plaza, the National Portrait Gallery, Atlas Performing Arts Center, the Arts Club of Washington DC and the Betts Theatre at the George Washington University. Dance Place will maintain its full program of adult and kids dance classes at the Brookland Artspace Lofts, and The Edgewood Arts Building on the corner of 8th Street NE and Monroe Street.

The Dance Place Board of Directors & Co-Directors Carla Perlo and Deborah Riley will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 from 4:30 – 6:00 PM to celebrate the expansion and renovation of Dance Place beginning mid-August.

After 32 years of being the “hub of dance” for Washington, DC, Dance Place is ready for an expansion and a major renovation.  While under construction from August 2013-February 2014, we will present performances in a variety of theaters and host daily classes at two locations on 8th St NE.  Performance and class details can be found at www.danceplace.org

About The Moving Forward Campaign

Dance Place is undergoing a $5 million capital campaign, “Moving Forward.” The campaign has the following three aspects: expansion and renovation of our main facility, program enhancement and the establishment of a building and cash reserve to improve the financial underpinning of the organization that will sustain our spirit of creativity for the next thirty years. To date, $3.07 million has been raised towards the $5 million goal.

With the face of Brookland changing daily, come and take the opportunity to meet some of the people behind Brookland’s bright new future.

Representatives from
the Bozzuto Group and ABDO Development (Monroe Street Market), EYA (Chancellor’s Row), the Menkiti Group (901 Monroe Street) and Carla Perlo, Founding Director of Dance Place (Moving Forward Campaign), will be on hand to talk about these new developments, and to take part in a Q&A session.

About the Venue:
12th Street Gallery is a temporary art space (Temporium) housed in a vacant storefront, which has been brought to life as an exhibition space for visual arts. As well as providing a showcase for local artists and craftsmen to display and sell their work, the 12th Street Gallery also hosts spoken word and poetry performances, film screenings and discussions.

24th Annual DanceAfrica, DC

Features Masters of Cuban Dance and Music from Santiago, Cuba Dance Place continues our presentation of world-class dance with the 24th annual DanceAfrica, DC and the Washington, DC premiere of internationally renowned Ballet Folklórico Cutumba. Straight from the Sí Cuba! Festival in New York, Dance Place joins major presenters such as Carnegie Hall, The Joyce Theater and Symphony Space in presenting a rich blend of Cuba’s best performing companies including Ballet Folklórico Cutumba in partnership with the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s DanceAfrica celebration.

Ballet Folklórico Cutumba, founded in the city of Santiago de Cuba in 1960, will be the featured
performers at Dance Place on Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5 during the 2:00pm and 8:00pm
concerts alongside the following dynamic companies: Coyaba Dance Theater, KanKouran West African Dance Company, Farafina Kan and Ezibu Muntu. Cutumba’s 25-member company is dedicated to the research and professional performance of traditional Afro-Cuban dance, music, and song originating in the Oriente region of Cuba. Their work recreates key elements at the heart of Afro-Cuban identity while adding the company’s own fresh interpretation through theatricality and costume design.

DanceAfrica, DC will be held May 30 - June 5, 2011 and includes master classes and performances with the best African dance companies in the DC metro area, an African marketplace and free outdoor

DanceAfrica, DC is a mainstay of Washington, DC’s summer lineup of events and is a vital and popular part of Dance Place’s educational and cultural programming. Since 1987, Dance Place has hosted the celebration in collaboration with DanceAfrica visionary Chuck Davis. Before that, Dance Place acted as the national coordinator to DanceAfrica, USA from 1990-1994.

DanceAfrica, DC is the second largest celebration of African performing arts in the United States. This year Dance Place anticipates hosting over 2,000 people with the positive message of community building and the richness of African culture through classes and performances.

Artspace Lofts Nearing Completion Applications Now Available

****Update***** 02MAR2011: the location of the March 26th Info session. It will still be the 26th from 10-12, but will now be at Source – 1835 14th Street NW


The Artspace Lofts (3225 Eighth Street NE) are nearing completion and set to be finished on time in June. When finished the development will consist of 41 live/work rental units directly adjacent to Dance Place's Headquarters and studio space for qualified DC artists making 60% or less of the area median income.

They have now opened up the applications for potential residents and posted a link on their website. They also have a slideshow of pictures that they have taken during the construction. Jaime Fearer, fellow Ward 5 resident and blogger, was able to attend one of the hard hat tours and graciously agreed to share some of her photos which you can see here.

Artspace will be holding informational meetings in March and you do not need to RSVP to attend.

Groundbreaking on Artspace Lofts

The official groundbreaking for the Dance Place and Artspace Lofts will be Friday April 30th. There will be a performance before the groundbreaking. This is exciting news as the development moves forward and a great addition to the Edgewood community (even though they call it Brookland - it is located in Edgewood!!).
