May 24th Bike Ride with Neighbors

BicylesSPACE is a great bike shop in DC that hosts a series of free bike rides around the city.  A group of neighbors usually does these rides together, so please send me an email (lifeontheedgewood@gmail.com) if you would like to join us!  They are easy paced and end with a picnic which is a great way to meet other cyclists and neighbors.

Announcing Our First Full Moon Outing This Season-- Join Us for a Ride and Picnic!

The Full Moon will be out Friday, May 24th and we are excited to again start up our Full Moon Outings that each time attracted hundreds of riders last summer.

Be sure to wear light colors and join us for an evening mosey along the waterfront to enjoy the pleasures of a calm spring night. After meeting at the shop at 8pm, the moonlight will guide our ride through the city. Along the way, there will be some musical surprises. And, we will finish with a grand picnic on the boardwalk overlooking the water at Yards Park.

We are happy to present this event for free. Enjoy a great evening of riding, music, food, and refreshing beverages on us! The night will be full of simple fun!
Please RSVP to our facebook invite and register here for the ride so that we can know how many people are coming. And, if you're willing to help set up the picnic or serve as a marshall along the ride route, kindly send a message to volunteer@bicyclespacedc.com.

Biking in Edgewood and Beyond

The evolution of my life with a bicycle began as it did for many children with a tricycle and then the upgrade to a two-wheeler with training wheels.  I will never forget the first day I rode without the training wheels as I donned a cape and was simultaneously angry and excited when I realized that my dad had let go and I was riding on my own!  As a child I rode my bike with my friends everywhere- to each other's houses, to the pool and to the store.  We never really thought about it as transportation just as freedom to go where we wanted without adults and mostly fun.  Once I got my driving license the car became our freedom as we could travel further and faster leaving my bike behind.  In college I was able to walk everywhere and that became my main method of transportation.  They also made all the buses free in Chapel Hill while I was there so riding the bus was the best and cheapest way to travel further distances.

When I moved up to the DC area after school for a job I fell in love with being able to walk or take public transportation everywhere.  I bought a new bike, but this time it was a road bike for exercise.  I would ride with my boyfriend for the sole purpose of working out.  Then I moved into DC proper and decided to go carfree.  A few years later Capital Bikeshare came and I joined right away.  I have grown to realize that biking in the city was not as scary as I thought it was once I was not clipped into my road bike's pedals.  I still plan out my routes well in advance, try to use bike lanes or paths as much as possible and ask other cyclists' advice on the best way to go.  In Edgewood we are really lucky to have the Met Branch Trail allowing the beginning and end of most bike trips to be off road.  This year I bought my own city bike with a basket for my dog and now we ride everywhere.  So it looks like I have come full circle with my biking as I now use it once again for transportation and freedom.  I have been reminded of how much fun a bike ride with friends can be just like it was as a child.  I am constantly asking neighbors if they bike and want to go on various rides.

In fact there are two rides this weekend that I and some Edgewood neighbors will be doing.  Please send me an email if you want to join us!

Tonight leaving Edgewood at 7:30 p.m. to do the BicycleSpace Kingman Island Ride and Luau

Sunday leaving Edgewood around 1:00 p.m. to do the Lion Ride in Anacostia.

Nice park NoMa, but where's the bike ramp?

Recently NoMa BID has released renderings for a park that they would like to build in the middle of L Street NE and they have also been circulating a petition asking for 18 million dollars from the city to help them add parks to NoMa.  First let me say that I love the NoMa BID- their movie nights, concerts, flowers and keeping the area clean.  However,  I have a couple of concerns.  The BID was created to accomplish all these things and you can tell how great the NoMa area is because of it.  Ward 5 does not have any BIDs and could really use that money to do many of the same improvements to Rhode Island Ave NE.  Also, when looking at the renderings for the park in the middle of L Street I do not see the new ramp that DDOT is working on that will go from the Met Branch Trail to L Street.  That ramp is needed as the stairs that are currently there are not adequate for biking traffic and were only meant to be temporary until a ramp was built.  With the new cycletracks coming to NoMa and the work on the Met Branch Trail connections up to Union Station it is very important that we ensure this ramp is built.  I am in favor of NoMa parks I just want to ensure that they do not interfere with the Met Branch Trail infrastructure.  Being able to enter and exit the Met Branch Trail on both M and L Street via ramp will greatly improve the riding experience from all directions, as well as, help relieve congestion as the trail grows in popularity.

Please check out the renderings of the proposed park here and let NoMa know they need to include the ramp to the Met Branch Trail!!

Capital Bikeshare Data for Edgewood

I wanted to do a more through post, but cannot get the dashboard to download the data.  While I work on that I wanted to share this graph which shows the number of bikeshare trips that started/ended at the Edgewood station on 4th and Adams Street NE.  It looks like the Edgewood station use is growing along with bikeshare.  I imagine it will pick up even more as stations are added in our area.

Saturday Rides on the Met Branch Trail -- First Ride This Saturday

With cooler weather in the forecast, the Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association is sponsoring a series of Saturday morning bicycle rides on the Metropolitan Branch Trail. These weekly group rides will be a good way to get out on the Trail, have some fun, meet your neighbors, and get some exercise.

The first ride will take place this coming Saturday, September 17th from 9-10 AM. We'll meet at the Brookland Kiosk at the corner of 12th and Newton and ride from there to the entrance of the MBT on 8th Street under the Franklin Street Bridge. The ride will last approximately 1 hour and will be a round-trip distance of approximately 4-5 miles. And, when we're done, you'll still have the rest of your Saturday to devote to whatever you have planned.

Future rides will take place--same time, same meeting place--every Saturday morning as follows: Sept. 24; Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; Nov. 5. We hope you'll consider joining us for some, all, or as many rides as you'd like!

I'm attaching a flyer with more information. Many thanks go to Jenny Isaacs for her graphic design of the flyer. Thanks, too, to Jake Abbott of Abbott Klar for providing us with multiple copies of it for posting and distribution. Please help us spread the word.

For more information, go to http://www.brooklandcivic.org/ or call 529-0953.

Next Kidical Mass Ride: Saturday, September 17

Next Ride: Saturday, Sept. 17

Our next ride is this Saturday, September 17th. The full ride is an epic ten-mile journey from Eckington down to Anacostia and back up to RFK Stadium and Kingman Island, but it’s designed to be hop-on, hop-off, so you can ride for whatever length you feel comfortable with. We’ll explore the beautiful Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, grab some BBQ or hot dogs at the RFK Farmer’s Market, and picnic at the River Terrace Recreation Center. Bring or buy your lunch—dessert is on us!

You can join the ride at any of the following points:

Eckington (Met Branch Trail @ R Street NE) 9:30am
Eastern Market (Eastern Market Metro) 10:15am (metro accessible)
Anacostia (Anacostia Metro Station) 11:00am (metro accessible)

CSX Holding up Pedestrian Bridge in Edgewood

CSX is holding up the building of the pedestrian bridge in Edgewood from the Met Branch Trail to the Rhode Island Avenue metro station.  Last year I wrote about the planned bridge to improve safety and access to the metro station from Edgewood.  Here is a link that shows the plans for the bridge and all the reasons that it is desperately needed!  I wrote about the number of people that would dangerously cross the railroad tracks and get stuck in the barbwire cutting themselves.  I have written multiple times about how the narrow sidewalks under the bridge and the decrepit staircase to the metro are dangerous for pedestrians.

The major hurdles such as designing the bridge, WMATA easements and funding are already accomplished leaving CSX as the last hurdle before DDOT can move the project forward.  CSX must grant DC air rights to the space above their railroad tracks in order for the bridge to be built.  CSX was very quick to erect prison-style chainlink and barbwire fencing around the tracks after the completion of the Met Branch Trail in Edgewood.  Why now when there is a safer, more attractive alternative to crossing the tracks are they dragging their feet?

We must put pressure on them to move the project forward!!  I have been emailing Harry Thomas Jr. and his staff about this for years now and have decided to move on to Tommy Wells to try and get this accomplished.  Please email, tweet and call them both until something is done.  The more voices and reminders the better!

Kidical Mass DC: Family bike ride and pool party this Saturday, 6/18

Greetings, fellow Met Branch Trail users--

I am a Bloomingdale resident and mom of Alex (15 months); you may have seen us playing in our front yard near 1st & Randolph Streets NW or walking our dog Linus around the neighborhood.

This spring, I helped bring Kidical Mass , the national movement to promote family bicycling, to DC. After two successful rides in Capitol Hill, we're branching out! For our June ride this Saturday, we'll be riding en masse from Turkey Thicket Playground to the Mt. Rainier Bicycle Co-op and then on to the Prince George's Pool in Mt. Rainier, where we've scheduled a pool party from 12 - 4!

Since I'll be biking up from Bloomingdale myself, I wanted to extend an invitation to Bloomingdale, Eckington, and Edgewood families to ride with me up the Met Branch Trail as a biketrain to the Brookland meetup. You can meet us in front of the Big Bear Cafe in Bloomingdale or at the R Street NE entrance to the trail, where we'll take a minute to discuss the latest proposals for improving bike access to the trail on R Street. A bit further up the trail, we'll meet up with Stephen Miller of Rails to Trails Conservancy, who were instrumental in getting the trail built. Rails to Trails is generously donating bottled water for this Saturday's ride.

Kidical Mass is a great opportunity to meet other cycling families and practice safe cycling skills for parents and children alike. You don't even have to participate in the main ride in order to join the Met Branch biketrain! Full details on the ride, including times, locations, and PG Pool admission information, are available on the Kidical Mass DC website at KidicalMassDC.blogspot.com. Feel free to email me at this address or at KidicalMassDC@gmail.com if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Sincerely,

Megan Odett
(+Tony, Alex and Linus the Wonderpuppy)

PS:  Because they are awesome, Rails to Trails is also helping to organize the following Met Branch Trail events:

*** Black Women Bike ride and clinic on June 25

Met Branch Trail maintenance and bike trailer to lend?

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to announce that Gospel Rescue Ministries has been hired to provide maintenance on the Met Branch and Anacostia trails. Their team will begin work next Tuesday starting with the Met Branch Trail and work area by area, trail by trail until the trails are all in pristine condition. Thank you volunteers for all the work that you have done while we have been completing this hiring process and we hope that you will continue to help us keep the trails clean (though this should not require as much of your time in the future)!

The trail maintenance team will be maintaining the trails by bicycle. However, they currently do not have trailers and are not sure the best trailer system to invest in. Therefore, if you have an extra trailer in your garage or one you are not using for the winter and would like to let the team use it as they decide what system to ultimately use (or if you have a trailer for sale) please contact Morris Queen at morris@grm.org. For more information about their programs, please see: www.grm.org.

Stay tuned for details and updates on our trail maintenance team!

Best, Heather

Metropolitan Branch Trail Safety

I have been thinking about this topic and post for awhile now and wanted to wait until I had all my thoughts together to write it. I love the Met Branch Trail - I walk, ride and run on it many times a week if not every day. I have never had a problem or unpleasant interaction while I am on it. Earlier this summer there were a rash of incidents of kids throwing rocks at people and if you have not heard this past week some kids threw urine on a biker. There have been other reports of people being pushed off their bikes and injured or hit. All of these reports upset me and enrage me that a community amenity is being abused instead of celebrated.

Then the question arises is how do we stop these kind of things from happening and make the trail a place everyone can enjoy? There are many things that are being and have been done. DDOT installed cameras earlier this year on the Eckington section of the trail and reported that seemed to stop the rash of rock throwing. They have now installed a camera in the Edgewood section of the trail and are looking into installing more. MPD has regularly been patrolling the trail and is aware of the need for continued patrols. There are the obvious things that you can do to make yourself feel safer - go in groups or with a friend, have your cell ready to dial if necessary (mine will voice dial which is great), take your dog, go at different times of day, call 911 if you see anything suspicous and look out for your neighbors. If you look at most of the reported incidences they seem to occur from late afternoon to evening, to bike riders, people that were by themselves, and near entrance points to the trail. I firmly believe that more eyes on the trail the better and I hope that everyone will continue to use it and encourage others to as well.

There are ways you can get involved with the trail. The Edgewood Walk/Run/Bike group meets every Tuesday, the new DCBIA nature trail and plants to explore, and the 5K planning group which is meeting tonight - information below.

When: Monday, October 4, 2010
Time: 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (Although we have moved the start time to 6:30 p.m., please feel free to come as you are able.)
Where: NOMA BID Office, 1200 First Street, NE, Suite 310, Washington, D.C. 20002 (You will be asked to sign in at the front desk, after which you can ask the attendant to send you up to the third floor) Nearest Metro is New York Avenue Station on the Red Line.
Agenda: See below

If you have not done so already, please RSVP to cristinaesteron@yahoo.com so that we have an idea as to how many to expect.

Thank you so much!

Chipotle Opens at Union Station Tomorrow!

As it was pointed out to me while it is not Edgewood the new Chipotle opening at Union Station this Saturday is only a short walk/ride down the Met Branch Trail. I have been using the Capital Bikeshare station at 4th and Rhode Island Ave this week on the trail between here and Union Station and it makes for a pretty easy trip.

Upcoming WABA Cycling Events

Please see the message below from WABA about some upcoming cycling events that they have planned. I am not sure of the exact routes, but since Edgewood is bordered by a couple of states (Rhode Island Ave and Michigan Ave) they might ride around here.

Dear Friends in Cycling,

WABA has a very busy and exciting week coming up and we would love your help in promoting our upcoming events! All detailed event information is available at waba.org

Thursday, September 23- Join WABA, the Capitol Riverfront BID, and Forest City as we celebrate the full moon and the opening of the brand new Yards Park! The Yards Park is a beautiful new park along the SE Waterfront close to Nationals Stadium and is a great location for the start/finish of our bike rides and fun before hand!
The fun will begin as WABA watches as the Washington Nationals take on the Houston Astros at 4:35pm. Tickets for this game are available now through WABA's online registration! And don't forget- the Nationals offer free bike valet parking! Following the game, we will walk over to the Yards Park where there will be food trucks if you're hungry, community groups and bike shops to talk shop with and more.
Beginning at 7:30pm, riders can check-in with WABA or register on-site for one of our two rides. At 8:30pm, WABA will lead an 11-mile ride leaving the Yards Park heading west along the Potomac River taking in sights along the way including Hains Point, the Lincoln Memorial, and National Mall. There will be a turn-around point for those wishing to make their ride shorter.

The Rides
50 States
The most unique and challenging bike ride in DC! This 60+ mile ride is for cyclists experienced and comfortable with riding through the city streets with traffic. The 50 States ride covers all 50 state streets in all 8 Wards in search of the District of Columbia's statehood. Often been referred to as "brutal," "insane," and "engrossing." You have not seen the city of Washington by bike until you have done the 50 States Ride.
*Cue sheets will be available the day of the ride. Because some of the cues may change last minute due to construction projects and road closures, WABA will not provide cue sheets in advance.
13 Colonies
Not quite as challenging as the 50 States Ride, but equally as enjoyable. Ride on all the streets named for every one of the 13 original colonies. This ride is a little under 15 miles and is also for cyclists who are comfortable with riding on city streets with traffic.
*Cue sheets will be available the day of the ride

Capital Bikeshare

The website for the new Capital Bikeshare program has launched and if you join today you get $25 off the year membership fees. You find out all about the program and how it works on their website. You can also check out the map of the proposed locations which includes one on 4th Street NE near Rhode Island Ave in Edgewood.

I joined today - could not resist the $25 dollars off and I have been thinking about buying a bike to ride around town since I only have a road bike now. Decided this is a much better solution and I don't have to carry around a lock or worry about it being stolen I can just return it to a different station.
