Arrest Made in Assault with the Intent to Commit First Degree Sexual Assault while Armed and Burglary:
2400 Block of 2nd Street, NE
(Washington, DC)- Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department have announced an arrest has been made in connection with the Assault with Intent to Commit First Degree Sexual Assault while Armed and Burglary that occurred in the 2400 block of 2nd Street, NE.
On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at approximately4:00 am, two suspects entered a residence and produced a handgun and a knife. One of the suspects sexually assaulted an adult female before taking property and fleeing.
On Saturday, June 29, 2013, 18-year-old Tayvon Barber of Northeast DC, was arrested and charged with Burglary One while Armed and Assault with the Intent to Commit First Degree Sexual Assault while Armed, following an investigation by the detectives of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Neighborhood Safety Walks
Today the Friends of Edgewood is having a neighborhood safety walk with MPD at 6:30 pm. This had already been planned before the incidents on the trail. We are gathering at the Pizza Mart on 4th and RI Ave NE . We are walking up to the Edgewood Rec and then up to Edgewood Terrace. Please come out and join us!
Then, on Monday at 6:30 pm the Friends of Edgewood is teaming up with the Eckington Civic Association, MPD, and the Guardian Angels for a safety walk/ride on the trail. More details to follow.

MPD-5D Burglary Tips
It is important to take preventive measures against break-ins. Strong locks – and good neighbors who look out for one another – can be effective deterrents to burglars. Here are a few tips that can help you keep you and your property safe and secure:
1. Make sure every external door is metal or solid wood and has a strong, well-installed dead bolt lock. Key-in-the-knob locks alone are not enough.
2. Sliding glass doors offer easy access to burglars if they are not properly secured. You can secure them by putting a broomstick or dowel in the inside track to jam the door, or by installing commercially available locks. To prevent the door being lifted off the track, drill a hole through the sliding door frame and the fixed frame. Then insert a pin in the hole.
3. Never leave windows unlocked or opened when you are away from your home.
4. Never hide keys around the outside of your home. Instead, try giving your extra key to a neighbor you trust.
5. When you move into a new house or apartment, re-key the locks.
6. Install a home burglar alarm.
If you see or hear something out of the ordinary, contact the police immediately. In the past, the information given to members of the police department by concerned residents and citizens has contributed to the closure of several criminal cases. Citizen information and tips are extremely useful and necessary for thorough police investigations. Please forward this information to your friends and neighbors. Safety Walk and Rally Thursday

Dear friends,
I invite you to join members of the LGBT community and the residents of Shaw, Bloomingdale, and Eckington in saying no to violence and hatred on the streets of DC.
On July 22, two men were physically assaulted while exiting their vehicle in the 1900 block of 3rd Street NE. Their assailants shouted homophobic slurs before punching and kicking the victims.
I live just a few blocks from the scene of this hate crime. Amy Loudermilk and I have been putting together this event, in coordination with the Eckington Civic Association President, and local ANC commissioners to maximize participation from the community.
Join us for a rally and safety walk through this neighborhood to make our message clear: "We shall not be moved."

We will gather for a short rally outside 1st and R Street NW before the safety walk to the location of the incident. Instead of a moment of silence, we will have a "moment of noise." The march will then return to the starting point. Big Bear Cafe is located about 7 blocks east of the Shaw Metro station.
We will be joined by representatives from Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV), the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department, the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Collective Action for Safe Spaces, the DC Office of LGBT Affairs, SMYAL, and the Critical Incident Team.
No one should have to walk in fear on the streets of DC because of hate. Whenever any community is targeted, we all have a duty to stand together.

Stolen Phone or Electronic Device? MPD may have recovered it for you!
If you have missed the recent news MPD has arrested many people and found hundreds of stolen items that were being illegally sold in corner shops and gas stations around the city. They have created a system where they are cataloguing the items and if you have had something stolen you can email them identifying information and may be able to recover it from them.
Here is the message from MPD:
I wanted to follow-up on my posting regarding the recent operation that resulted in the recovery of several hundred stolen electronic items. If you believe your property may be among those recovered, you may now submit your ownership information to stolen.property@dc.gov. In order to help us search the available information and conclusively establish ownership, please submit a serial number or other uniquely identifiable information, and our members will follow-up with each inquiry. Thank you.

Shooting and Arrest In Edgewood
Please see the email below from MPD regarding a shooting and subsequent arrest in Edgewood this past weekend. I really appreciate their hard work and will send out information when this case appears in court for court watch.
On Saturday, January 14, 2012 at approximately 1:40am, a Pizza Delivery Person was delivering food in the 200 block of Adams St. NE when robbed at gunpoint by three individuals. During the offense, the victim was shot in the facial/neck area. He was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.
MPD officers conducting a canvass of the suspects observed three individuals in a vehicle matching the lookout provided. These individuals were subsequently arrested and charged with the offense.

Metropolitan Police - PSA 501 Meeting Summary
For those of you not on the neighborhood listserv I wanted to share these notes from last week's PSA501 meeting from our neighbor to the south.
Metropolitan Police - PSA 501 Meeting Summary
Several Officers from MPD met with concerned community members during the normally scheduled PSA meeting on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Harry Thomas Recreation Center.
Topics discussed included:
·Homicide at Lincoln Rd. NE – the victim was a well known criminal from the Trinidad Area. MPD believes that the victim may had been responsible for some of the robberies that had been taking place in our area. The case is still under investigation and MPD continue to seek our any information from potential witnesses.
·Shooting at the 200 Q St NW. The shooting took place at the same location of a previous shooting earlier this year. It is possible that the shooting was drug related. If any neighbors have any further information or may have a security camera that may have recorded something, MPD would like to hear from you.
·Robberies have increased recently but are still lower than last year. Many robberies are taking place along N. Capitol St and Florida Avenue area. Usually people walking home from work or the metro. MPD urge residents to please not be distracted on their cell phones, texting, or reading email while walking home. Be aware of surroundings and avoid walking with head sets on that may prevent you from listening someone approaching. ·Burglaries – appears that the individuals doing some of the robberies in the evening are also carrying our the burglaries during the day. Remember to keep your windows locked, doors secured and valuables out of the front and back yard where they can be stolen. Also, please remember to lock your bicycles and remove the seat if possible.
·Arrests – MPD has conducted several arrests of burglaries in progress. 20 minutes prior to the PSA meeting, an arrest was made on Florida and N. Capitol St from a robbery in progress. MPD has also been conducting arrests for public urination, possession of open alcohol containers as well as trespassing.
·Focus – MPD is increasing bike patrols in the area. Currently, there are about 6 police officers on bike patrol, that number will be increased. Bike patrols will allow MPD to focus on the alleys and on groups hanging out in dark alleys during the day and night. MPD will also be adding additional resources to PSA 501 to focus on key areas (Truxton Circle). This weekend is also All Hands On Deck as well.
·Community Partnership – a member of the community suggested MPD doing more outreach to meet community residents. MPD suggested community restarting safety walks. Safety walks were successful this summer in bringing out neighbors and MPD and getting neighbors and officers acquainted. This is the fall season and great time for walks, so we hope neighbors will join us in staring neighborhood walks twice a week again.
·5th District Police Citizen’s Advisory Council Awards Dinner – on Thursday, October 27th, please join us to honor the men and women of the 5th District Police. The Awards Dinner will take place at the Navy Yard starting at 6:30pm. Tickets are $40.

MuralsDC to Kick Off 5th Year with “The Art of Vandalism”

A Discussion with City Agencies & Graffiti Artists to Explore Lasting Solutions (Washington, DC) – MuralsDC will kick off its 2011 program with a panel discussion to explore the root of, and solutions for, graffiti Tuesday, July 26, from 6pm-8pm at Busboys & Poets (14 and V St., NW). The panel will feature former graffiti taggers, current artists and representatives of DC government agencies who abate graffiti and fund public art. The event will also feature a preview of the upcoming documentary film “The Red Line Project,” which explores the proliferation of graffiti that runs along Metrorail’s Red Line. “By the end of May, the Department of Public Works (DPW) had already responded to twice as many requests to remove graffiti as we completed in all of last year,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “While initiatives like MuralsDC have helped to keep repeatedly tagged walls graffiti-free, we need to get to the root of the problem to identify permanent solutions.”
MuralsDC was created to combat the rising tide of illegal graffiti. The program positively engages District youth by teaching proper art techniques. It also provides supplies and a legal means for youth to practice and perform their skill in a way that promotes respect for public and private property and community awareness. Through the program, more than 30 works of public art have been installed throughout the city. "The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) supports MuralsDC, because it sheds light on the artistic talents of graffiti artists,” said DCCAH Interim Director Ayris Scales. “We feel it's important to fund programs that allow young residents to express themselves legally and without the worry of repercussions. Whether someone is painting oil on canvas or aerosol spray on a wall, their art is an expression of themselves that should be valued." The panel will be moderated by Mazi Mutafa, who supervises the artwork for MuralsDC. Mutafa is the executive director of Words, Beats and Life, which provides an array of educational outreach programs to District youth and teaches them the art of “legal” graffiti.
MuralsDC was launched in 2007 by Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham. The program, coordinated by DCCAH and DPW, positively engages District youth by teaching proper art techniques and respect for public property. Throughout the summer, the program will install murals in Wards 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

MuralsDC was launched in 2007 by Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham. The program, coordinated by DCCAH and DPW, positively engages District youth by teaching proper art techniques and respect for public property. Throughout the summer, the program will install murals in Wards 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
PSA 501 Drug Free Zone
I just wanted to make the Eckington/Edgewood communities aware that the Chief of Police declared a Drug Free Zone in our neighborhood today, July 21st. It encompasses the area bounded by Adams Street, 4th Street, Rhode Island Avenue, 5th Street, V Street, and 3rd Street, Northeast and will run through June 25th.
Drug Free Zones are temporarily established to allow the enforcement of anti-loitering laws against groups believed to be involved in illicit drug activity. Also, this weekend MPD is working All Hands On Deck, which means there will be a lot of additional manpower and resources in our district.

[MPD-5D] Summer vacation--watch your house
Please see the messge below from MPD about notifying them when you go on vacation. I wish I had this information before I went on mine!
All: As many residents leave for summer vacations, the Fifth District will be instituting a program where you can call or email us to let us know if you will be away from DC during a vacation. If you provide us the dates you will be away and provide us a local contact person, we will have our officers ride by your home when possible to keep an eye on things. This is not a guarantee of any sort, but we will compile a list of homes and try to check on them as often as we can. Please email your PSA lieutenant, or me, or call 698-0111 during business hours, with your request. Obviously, we tell you not to send us this information on any group-wide email.

"Breaking the Silence on Youth Violence" Youth Outreach Anti-Violence Summit, Friday, June 24, 2011
Calling all youth between the ages of 13 to 18 years old! The U.S. Attorney’s Office East of the River Community Prosecution Team want YOU to participate in an interactive youth summit entitled “Breaking the Silence on Youth Violence”. The goal of this summit is to “deal with the real” and address the senseless violence surrounding our youth. We recognize that a youth’s exposure to violence, whether as victims or witnesses, is often associated with long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm. Children exposed to violence are also at a higher risk of engaging in criminal behavior later in life and becoming part of a cycle of violence. We want to educate youth on how they can become part of the solution and help create safer neighborhoods by “breaking the silence on youth violence.”

REMINDER: PSA 501 Meeting Tonight
Sending a reminder that the PSA 501 meeting is tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Edgewood Rec Center. It is a good time to meet your local police partners and discuss crime and issues in the community. I am going to stop by briefly to let them know about some hot spots that I have noticed picking up trash during the neighborhood cleanup - high little bag concentrations. I also am going to pitch my Neighborhood Night Out idea. Hope to see you there!

Information on MPD's Redistricting
Chief Lanier will be at the 5D Citizen’s advisory Council (CAC) meeting on Thursday, June 23, at 7 pm, to explain the MPD’s redistricting plans and to speak with the community. We invite all of you to attend. The meeting will be in the Fifth District community room.
