[MPD-5D] Summer vacation--watch your house

Please see the messge below from MPD about notifying them when you go on vacation.  I wish I had this information before I went on mine!

All: As many residents leave for summer vacations, the Fifth District will be instituting a program where you can call or email us to let us know if you will be away from DC during a vacation.   If you provide us the dates you will be away and provide us a local contact person, we will have our officers ride by your home when possible to keep an eye on things. This is not a guarantee of any sort, but we will compile a list of homes and try to check on them as often as we can. Please email your PSA lieutenant, or me, or call 698-0111 during business hours, with your request. Obviously, we tell you not to send us this information on any group-wide email.

Your PSA lieutenants are:
501            Lts. Ron Wright (mailto:Ronald.WrightJr@dc.gov)%20and Roger Roch (roger.roch@dc.gov)
502            Lt. Ed Bernat (edward.bernat@dc.gov)
503            Lt. Corinne Hughes (corinne.hughes@dc.gov)
504            Lts. Patricia Janifer (Patricia.Janifer@dc.gov) and Tim Haselden (timothy.haselden@dc.gov)
505            Lt. Gary Durand. (gary.durand@dc.gov)

Thank you,
Andy SolbergCommander, 5D

REMINDER: PSA 501 Meeting Tonight

Sending a reminder that the PSA 501 meeting is tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Edgewood Rec Center.  It is a good time to meet your local police partners and discuss crime and issues in the community.  I am going to stop by briefly to let them know about some hot spots that I have noticed picking up trash during the neighborhood cleanup - high little bag concentrations.  I also am going to pitch my Neighborhood Night Out idea.  Hope to see you there!

Met Branch Trail Safety Response From MPD

Dear MBT Community,

First, I apologize for the delay in responding, I've been on vacation for the last week,

Next let me apologize on behalf of MPD for the comment that an officer reportedly made advising a victim to avoid using the trail. That is neither the Department's position, nor mine, and I have been on record here encouraging people to use the trail - as I myself do - and I will continue to do so. I'm also addressing this issue with all of my officers.

I will continue to advise the members of this group of any occurrences on the trail. In analyzing the recent crimes, it is correct that in the past most issues were north of Rhode Island Ave. in the Edgewood area; however, these events in the last few weeks have been south of Rhode Island Ave.

I am attaching several maps that show robberies and assaults occurring within 200 feet of the trail, 300 feet, and in the area as a whole in the last 60 days to give some perspective on these events (these maps were pulled on June 3rd).

As far as the "address" of the trail, our dispatchers should be able to recognize the MBT and dispatch to it. Their systems have been updated and I understand they are in the process of training all operators. I believe they need a cross street for an exact location – this is the same process they use for our interstate highways that don't have a "proper" address.

We do have signs showing those streets that intersect with the trail; however, there are some portions where the trail does not physically intersect and we are working on ideas to get those areas marked properly.

The location, description, and M.O. of the assailants leads us to believe that these crimes were perpetrated by single suspect / group of suspects. We have identified some persons of interest and are currently investigating. We will also continue enhanced patrol of the trail and are working on implementing an additional action plan.

Finally let me say that I am very encouraged by the dedication to the trail that this community has shown, and I hope you continue to work proactively to improve it. Please continue to reach out to me and MPD with any ideas, suggestions, concerns, or requests.

Creating a Safer Edgewood: Reserve Corps, Neighborhood Watch & Jr. Police Academy

Please see the information from MPD about opportunities for community involvement and helping to keep our neighborhood safer.  Recently there have been many on the listservs, myself included, that wanted to know what we could do to help MPD and our neighbors to create a safe environment on all streets at all times.  The list below presents some ways that we can get involved beyond the listserv and meetings.  I really think we need to start an active neighborhood watch in Edgewood.  I am going to try to attend one of the trainings and encourage others to get involved as well.

Metropolitan Police Department Reserve Corps Opportunities

The Metropolitan Police Department Reserve Corps is now accepting applications for the position of Reserve Police Officer.

The MPD Reserve Corps is a volunteer program providing qualified civic-minded individuals with the opportunity to assist the MPD in carrying out its policing responsibilities. Members of the Metropolitan Police Reserve Corps can make a volunteer public safety contribution to their community in many ways.

Reserve Officer assignments vary and range from administrative support to the broad duties of career police officers. Reserve Officers are expected to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours per month or 192 hours per year. Last year, Reserve Officers provided over 17,500 hours of supplemental services to the department.

Please visit http://dcpolice.jobs/ for more information regarding the reserve program and to apply today. The application deadline is set for May 16, 2011 for the upcoming class. You can also email questions to Patrick.Burke@dc.gov

Upcoming Citywide Neighborhood Watch Training

MPD will be hosting a series of Citywide Neighborhood Watch Training Sessions in partnership with each district’s Citizens Advisory Council. For more information, visit: http://www.mpdc.dc.gov/NeighborhoodWatch
